Sounds to me like the dog has no training period no obedience at all

I have a choc lab retrieves like a sob with dummies bumpers balls toys ect. When it comes to retrieving ducks and other birds he swims back until he can stand then he drops it starts tossing it around then tries to run off with it. It wasnt a problem last year but now he won't stop. Anybody got any ideas. Hard headed male is Pissing me off good. |

Alright cause I've got a yellow lab an all OB is great an loves to retrieve an brings everything right back but in water about 5 feet or so back on land he drops it think "hold" needs more training. Sorry not tryin to jack thread. Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk 2 |

You using a shock collar? If not, get one, you'll never go hunting again without it. Not every dog needs it, every dog has a different personality and responds differently to stimuli. Mine used to do the same thing, now when I say "Give", she Gives. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD |

Thanks for the pointers I started him on FF again so ill keep on that for a few weeks and turn his attitude around. We will try again in the marsh tomarrow. I'll be hunting out of the boat so I shouldnt have problems cause he has no choice but to come back to the boat. Give him an inch he takes a mile so he will be on a short leash. He's only a year And half old and his first year of hunting other than going 1 r 2 times last year |

Most of the prob is the dog disobeying u and not coming back his obedience is weak work on that u shouldn't have to keep force fetching a dog if done right the first time |

Puddler what part of the state are you in? If he hasn't been force fetched yet I really wouldn't mess with it right now seeing we're right in the middle of the season, the middle of duck season isn't the time to be force fetching a dog. When I FF a dog I stop all retrieving altogether until it's done, which usually takes 3-4 weeks, 2 weeks at a minimum if you get a dog that really gets it quick. Your dog is really a pup yet and this is his first hunting season, I'd hunt him and let him see what it's all about. He brings it back heel him and throw him another retrieve. Make it fun and he'll start figuring it out. The only thing I wouldn't let him slip on is breaking to retrieve birds. Steadiness needs to start from day 1 in the blind, the force fetching would be a good after season project that way you're not rushing through it and doing it correctly. Force fetching really is the foundation and sets the tone for further training |

He has gone through obedience training my grandpa owns a kennel and has been training dogs for 50+ years and was in the scout dog plattoon in Korea. I keep him on a leash or on a short rope teathered to the boat while hunting for now to keep him from breaking when we shoot. I've gone back to working with him on a lead to reinforce he has to come directly back to me. Hes still inexperienced when it comes to field work and will only get better as time goes on. I understand he's still a pup and its going to take time for him to learn. Going into the season I told my buddies that my dog is going to suck and he's going to be a hassle at times but it will pay off in the future. This is also the first dog I'm training for hunting so its new to both of us. I live just outside of milwaukee, we need a good push of birds cause its hard to teach the pup in the field when the slush are empty, I like the looks of the north winds this week though |

It's all situational when you introduce a dog in newer environments he's bound to slip up....does he need to be tethered the boat? No but it reinforces that he needs to stay. It's easier than pulling him out of the water and making the correction after he jumps outta the boat...Dick |

My grandpa doesn't hunt or train for hunting he does obedience he probably would have advise but I didn't ask him about it. I figured I would ask on a forum where many people who have trained duck dogs could give some advise. You didnt give any training advise so quit n1ggering up my thread. Dick |

I didn't say i knew anything about dogs, I get on here to try and learn stuff. Doesn't do much good though because people like you who probably DO know something have nothing more useful to say when somebody asks a question than"you need a 2x4 upside the head".
