Post Dog coldness, how to tell
This morning went hunting it was raining an about 40 degrees out I got a yellow lab an this is his first year hunting had his vest on an he got wet while putting out decoys but until shooting time he was like shivering. Could he be cold, I know people hunt there dogs in snow an colder weather than that. Thanks.

Im sure he's cold.. im cold too in the blind.. but what we use as gear dogs have as insulation if they are healthy and have appropriate fat stores.. they can tolerate temperature extremes very well.. tis why they shed in heat and pile on fur and fat stores in winter.. working during hunting season can burn more fat of course so feed them very well during season..

my dog is an inside dog until hunting season.. then i have him outside so his coat can thicken and he is used to the cold temps.. he always shakes a little right after first jumping in.. stops after a little while.. but i definitely wanna take a warm inside dog then throw him into the ice water.. not only is that a pretty dick move.. i would guess it could cause shock just like in people lol..

not an vet just my .02

Mine was cold but she was in water covering her back the whole hunt. The fist time I heard her whine. I felt like a dick too cause it was low 30's and she's an inside dog. But didn't take her the next day because of that reason.

Here is an interesting read about hypothermia in a dog.

Thanks for all the good info, he is a healthy dog an i have been feeding him more than normal since winter started. He will start spending more time outside during the cold! I don't let him sit in the water also.

I have had ice form on my dog before because it was so cold and he would jump right back in. I think he would work himself to death if I would let him. I have noticed when he is real cold he starts staring off into space and acting dumb. I usually make him stop and warm up by a heater when he starts to get that way.

Out of the water for sure and out of the wind if possible is best. Next time stick your hand inside the vest and see how warm it is.

I started feeding mine an extra cup in the morning and evening, his neck has definitely gotten thicker but not a huge difference.
