Nice looking pup. Every time I am around Ddm's my wife and I want one... then I think about the cockleburs we hunt in sometimes and think I may just stay with the labs. Great dogs no doubt. Enjoy .

I taught him this today. I am introducing the clicker aspect as well as manners. He has been very good at night and about sleeping in his crate. Last night was the first night he didn't whine. The other nights when he whines it because he needs to pee. He knows it is his hosue and he will go to it during the day when he wants to nap. We have had very minimal "accidents in the house"(he peed as i was typing this lol. i am gonna really start pushing the training from here on out. he is now acclimated to his house and its now time to work

Boykins have begun to make a very good impression the last
few years with many earning advanced titles in hunt tests. I
thought about a Boykin more so because of our Granddaugher.
In the end, a Lab just seemed better suited for cold, late season
duck hunting in northern Illinois.

Have fun with that pup! 8-)

How do Boykins do in deep open water, I usually hunt in sloughs but sometimes hunt the big river

Post subject:  Re: Meet Otto

This is my frist one. From what understand the are better pothole dogs that big open water. Not saying that they can't do it, just that labs and Chesapeake are kore efficient at it

Yeah I have been doing allot of reading on them, that's a good looking pup too. Where did you get him from, I actually have a kennel bout a half an hour away.

11 weeks sits on command an whistle. Knows inside and outside means. He is kenneling on command but still working on it to really enforce it.

Post subject:  Re: Meet Otto

congrats on the pup! We love our boykin and will be getting a second one come spring. Great dogs

as for open water swimmers. they do fine but i will say i think some boykins are stronger than others. just depends.

Post subject:  Re: Meet Otto

So would a male, being bigger, should handle open water better? I am close to a couple kennels, but one right up the road, does not hunt his. What yall think

Author:  dom [ Mon Aug 25, 2014 10:24 am ]
Post subject:  Re: Meet Otto

my male is the biggest (tall) boykin i've ever seen (51lbs) and swims great in deep water. Just slow. He takes his damn time when swimming. He also gets tired faster.

His aunt (normal sized female) hauls ass when in the water and doesnt get warn out ever! So it really comes down to the individual dog

I dont know anyone with a boykin that wished they went with something else.

Post subject:  Re: Meet Otto

I want a Female, the breeder near me doesn't hunt or train his though. But there is a guy on Georgia that has some great looking dogs. I'm in North bama, any recommendations?

Author:  dom [ Mon Aug 25, 2014 12:44 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: Meet Otto

my recommendation would using the boykin spaniel society website. they have a list of registered litters with contact info so you can contact the breeder. that will give you the chance to speak directly to the breeder and ask all the questions you want.

if they have hip and eye certs it will allow you to see some pedigree as well.
