10 month old lab doing well but is dropping the dummy when exiting water to shake off. How do I stop the dummy dropping?

30 foot check cord... As soon as he stops swimming/starts walking in water start pulling him to you using the cord.. You don't have to yank him, just apply pressure enough to where he does not stop. Then lots of praise "good hold" when he gets to you holding bumper.

^^ I was going to suggest this, but lots of folks take force fetch too far.. It's real easy for force fetching to back-fire if you don't know what your doing.

I like the cord idea. He never drops it on land, only when exiting the water to shake.

force fetch as said . Also it's been noted if you don't know how and it's your time , them you should seek a pro's help . You can mess up a dog if you don't know how to read it and never done it before . You could also find a retriever club close to you where someone would help .
The problem is you are in hunting season now , if you are going to keep using her , then you shouldn't start till the season is over . I don't do any markings drills nor fun bumpers when I'm FF a dog . It's not a quick thing , depends on the dog and shouldn't be rush . Good luck !

Force is a good way to go but if you choose not to go this route backing up works well. As the dog starts to exit the water start walking backwards then stop and meet the dog before they have an opportunity to drop the dummy.

The dog shouldn't shake until after you tell them. It's not ease back on over here. It's you bring that bumper to me right fucking now

The best way to deal with dropping upon exiting water is to be
proactive in training. This means to train ahead of time to avoid
this very common problem. First when a pup is introduced to water
and not retrieving teach them the shake command.

When they come out you know they are going to shake so you
waggle your hand and say "shake". Doing this at the right time
reinforces the behavior. It won't be long before a pup will just
shake when you "waggle and say shake". Get him use to doing
that on land after the initial shake at the water's edge.

The next step is to meet the dog at the water's edge or even
in the water when retrieving. Take the bumper before he has
a chance to shake.

If he is excited about "here" pretty soon you can receive him
a short distance from the shore and he will have learned that
shake will be coming rather quickly on your command after
delivery. It becomes a conditioned response.
