Buying a puppy for a christmas present. Where to Start?
I am going to buy myself and my family a dog for Christmas this year. My price range is about $600 - $800.00 and I am looking for either a black Lab, fox red lab, or a boykin spaniel. I want a smaller female full grown 40-45 lbs.
What/were is a good source for hunting dog classifieds and how soon should I start looking?
what should I look for in the parents other than a smaller bitch to give me the best chances of getting a smaller full grown dog?
any suggestions appreciated Robbie

Check with the breeder. My dogs mother and father tended to throw smaller stocky dogs even though the dad was a big male. The breeder can prolly help you out. He will know best. Pup size means nothing. My pup was a big male for a pup but only ended up 65-70 lbs depending on if on our out of duck season. I know a breeder ( nothing butt labs ) has a fox red male and throws a lot of fox red pups . He's a lil on the pricey range but has some great blood lines. Hit me up if you want his contact info.

These are probably the best classifieds around. Make sure both parents have all of their health clearances: hips, elbows, eyes, EIC, CNM, etc. http://www.retrievertraining.net/forums ... ab-Puppies

Notes for thoughts . You can get a hole lot more dog if you go with black . Not saying because they're the color Black is better than the others , it's just easier to find a well bred Black lab with heath clearance's , with solid genetics , that are backed up with a 2 year warranty on health defects from the breeder for that price range . You will pay more for a different color that have the right genetics , also the Boykin will tend to run more too . rcmannjr also gave you've great advise . Just my thought's , I've been involve with lab's since the 60's , hunted , Field Trials , and Hunt test . You can also locate the nearest Hunting Retriever Club , they could point you in the right direction locally .

When you find the right breeder don't limit yourself to a puppy you can have for Christmas morning. Find the right pairing and pick it up whatever time of the year it happens even if Christmas doesn't come until February.

Re: Buying a puppy for a christmas present. Where to Start?
Wish I would have caught this thread earlier. I have a line on a FC/AFC x Master passes litter that's about to be bred. The pups will be a bit more, but not outrageous. I'm taking first pick male.
You're welcome to come out and watch our training group. We're in the Prairieville area and run All Age Field Trials. Might open your eyes to what these dogs can do.
Good luck with your pup! I'm sure she will be a go-getter!

Pudelpointer.
- Great dog for people with allergies. - Has hair and no fur. - Great family dog. - Amazing temperament.
We love our dog... great for early Ontario geese all the way into mid season upland to late ducks.
