Well guys I'm underway with my first ever dog. Sent him to a trainer last year and he's great with obedience and retrieving. Took him out for his first hunts last weekend on a trip to Kansas. He picked up every duck we shot. I need a little advice though.... When I send him out he heads out into the decoys and looks and if he can't see the duck he comes back to boat or walks around the boat just farting around. I would have to walk him out in the direction of the duck and once he got his eyes on it he would haul ass and go get it. Where am I at here? Tips, tricks, steps? |

Are you allowing him to see the birds fall or do you have him down in the bottom of the blind where he can't see anything going on? |

Got a brand new dog also. I actually changed my blind a little so I can have him sitting on the bow of my boat. It is not ideal and my older dog never saw a bird fall but until I am confident I can drive him thru the decoys across the pond and into the grass, I am going to let him mark. |

You are asking your dog to run blinds does you dog run blind retrieves? No:-----teach him blinds retrieves. Yes :-----revisit blind retrieves. I however have a feeling that you probably need more training than he does. |

You and your dog need to go to the trainer. Let the trainer instruct you how how to handle your dog. If he doesn't have the time to train you, find a new trainer |

The trainer I used was in Louisiana. I'm back in Bama now, good idea for a dog blind on the bow. I'm going to use that through the season and begin training him with blind retrieves. Saw a couple videos on YouTube. Thanks for the responses guys. |

Plenty of great trainers and groups in Alabama. Find a training group and go watch, help out, and learn. Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk |

If your dog trainer did not work your dog with blind retrieves and live birds, get your money back. |

He went for 4 months and he's solid on obedience and through force fetch. I think he did a good job with him, I just have to take it from here now. My dogs 14 months old. Hey I texted dean Jr today he never replied, tell him to hit me back |

As much as I hate Freddy king. He has a pretty good YouTube series on training a retriever. I think it's called self training a waterfowl retriever |

A guy named Carl Boudreaux. He did a great job very professional guy. It was a messed up situation for me though I was down there working and I never got to go with him and watch and learn how to handle my dog. And when I finished that job I came home never got an opportunity to work and handle him with the trainer. He went over everything with me commands and things but we never got to get in depth with it I didn't make the time to go over there. So it's my fault really |

I didn't even think about having him down in there not able to see what's going on. It's a learning curve that's for sure. |

Was waiting for that lmao ^^^ I've used both smartwork and some Freddy King mixed in. My pup retrieved her first duck yesterday. I've trained 2 dogs thru force fetch and force to pile and they've done great. She's about 11 months now. Remote sit is holding us back. Keeps wanting to sit at my side instead of in the field. |

Let me think a little about this BamaBoy. I've trained a "few" dogs in my time but, I've been busy getting T'giving dinner ready for my family tomorrow. I think I can provide some suggestions. |
