 Re: 2011 FLOOD UPDATES!
Good news for Butte LaRose.
NWS removed the flood warning and revised the crest to below 25'(which is flood stage). But they are expecting some flooding in some structures. Instead of getting 5' of water in your house will get only 1' of water. Sheriff and the Parish homeland security are mobing equipment back into the area to help protect these house/camps. Residence are NOT under mandatory evacuations anymore.
But those in Sherburne and Happytown are still under mandatory evacuations, you have to be out by 8am Saturday morning.

 Re: 2011 FLOOD UPDATES!
Here is the other issue w/ the flooding. It is pushing wildlife out of the Basin and into surrounding areas.
This was taken about 2 hours ago by one of my crews working East of Livonia:

 Re: 2011 FLOOD UPDATES!
FROM THE TECHE NEWSPAPER:
I-10 corridor across the west side of the Atchafalaya Basin closed to boats
Baton Rouge – The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries has closed boat traffic in the Atchafalaya Basin from the Henderson levee on the west side to the Butte La Rose levee on the east side.
The closed area extends from the southern span of the Interstate 10 Bridge to a half a mile north of the span on the north side.
Because of the high water in the area, the Entergy high voltage electrical transmission lines that run across the Basin there are only seven feet above the surface of the water – dangerously low for boat traffic.
To avoid de-energizing the lines and cutting off electricity to many citizens and the Butte La Rose Welcome Center, LDWF decided to restrict boat traffic in the area described below.
The coordinates of the four corners of that portion of the Atchafalaya Basin closed to boat traffic are as follows:
•30.331556N and -91.7881W
•30.349317N and -91.723331W
•30.323706N and -91.788605W
•30.342755N and -91.7196W.
The closure will remain in effect until further notice.

 Re: 2011 FLOOD UPDATES!
When the crew called they kinda had the "I am scared" in their voice. The bear had watched them from about 150' away for a few minutes before it crossed the slough.
But the bear numbers have been climbing steadily in the Atch. basin for a few years now. Will be interesting how this flood will ultimately affect them.

 Re: 2011 FLOOD UPDATES!
Last year my buddy saw a bear on every hunt he made in the basin right there. They never gave him any trouble. I've heard the number of bears in that area estimated anywhere from 150 to over 300.
