Just bought a 1648 Crestliner Modified V hull with a 2001 Go-devil long tail with 350 hours. Runs about 20 with 3 people and a dog and close to 25 alone.

Motor has always been serviced including oil, plugs and shaft has always been lubricated with new bushings every season.

As far as my research has led, it is a trusty dependable motor with no issues besides the old school bushing and seal system instead of the new bearings.

Any suggestions as to long term maintenance? how long do these usually last? any modifications to lengthen motor life, not looking for more performance, just dependability.

Change the oil and filter every 6 months,keep it greased,park it out of the elements and run it wide open and often.

Thanks, thats my plan, to use it often and not let it sit around.
Any tips as to the drive? I was told to use #2 grease and grease it often when needed. but should I convert the drive to bearings like the new go devils?

Use the red grease Coco recommends-Aqualube I think it is.You can get cheaper grease like the Pennzoil #2 grease at Walmart but the Aqualube is thicker and I believe just a better product.Use it on your trailer hubs also.The original seals are good and easier to change and you will never be stranded by a bad bearing.You will probably use twice as many lower seals than upper with mono line and other trash you run through but seals are easy to change.Take your prop off and grease the threads every time you change the engine oil-this ensures your prop does not rust to the shaft.Grease the shaft after use and you will be fine.

Great speeds! What kind of mods are on the motor? I'm assuming stage 3 with exhaust, carb, intake, heads, cam, roller rockers and the whole nine yards. How many rpms are you turning and what size prop?

mine is a 1986 model. i put the alemite greaser on and a center bushing but left it at that. the thing with the top bearing is it makes alignment easier. when you get the hang of setting up a top bushing then i really dont think its a upgrade i would make. im on year four on my top bushing.

What kind of mods are on this motor? That is screamin fast for a 23 longtail...

This boat ran 20.4Mph with a 250lb,170lb men and 120lb girl and a 30lb Chesapeake bay retriever.
just purchased a Garmin Oregon 450t handheld I'm mounting in the boat and I will post pics of speed next time I go out
The boat is a riveted Jon boat that is very lightweight, just had it out last week in the everglades and I was plowing through muddy airboat trails with no problems...
