Post Prop Pitch ?'s
Got a 1448 with a 27btlt. Was told when i bought it it had a 9x7 prop. Last night catfishin tgree people gennerator and gear a good 800 pounds in the boat with the weight positioned just right i was still able to plane out and get 12 mph up river. My question is will a 9x6 be better or should i stick with the 9x7.

Post Re: Prop Pitch ?'s
My MB 27 LT is rated for a 9x7 prop and everywhere I've looked, all the mud motor mfg.'s recommend a 9x7 prop for the 27 HP Kohler LT. That said, both a GD and a Ron Hill 9x6 prop have served me better- meaning I turn a few hundred more rpms and get 1.5 mph more than the 9x7 Tiger MB prop it came equipped with (and that I replaced when it sheared hitting some rock). I am near sea level, traversing little mud but plenty of veggies. You initial subject is "Prop Pitch" and I wished I knew more about that- the mfg. should be able to give you some indications what is best for your area, as well as any service centers for your motors. I imagine the boys running LT's and mud motors way up in Utah's elevation, would need a slightly different prop pitch and other tweaks for optimum performance. On the different sites they only list the sizes, 9x6, 9x7, and so on, but no indication of the availability of different pitched props. I'd love to hear anyone comment on this. The other factor is the amount of "cup" on the props and if this a variable offered by the mfg.'s?
I must say you need to be careful, mudduck, with that much gear and weight on that 1448, I get maybe 15.5 mph with three hunters(@ 200# each) and all the duck hunting gear, so you are not doing too shabby.

I know that dealing with outboards that when it comes to propping to get the most you can get there is always going to be some compromise. That being said i was wondering which prop has the better load carrying capcity vs loss in mph. You said that your 9x6 turns more rpm's which is why you can go faster correct? Even with the extreme load i had last night i was still able to turn 3950 rpm's and run 12 mph up the river my phone died though so i couldnt tell how fast i was going down river. Before i put the deck on i used to run a light load but now that i have the deck and the genny my loads will be heavier than what they have been and i just want to figure out the best route i should take as far as reprop or just run the piss out of it like it is.

In my opinion, you need a new prop if you're running 3950 with a 9X7 prop and a heavy load at 12mph. However, I also believe a 9X6 would be the best prop when running a heavy load with you 27 hp.

I think a 9x6 with a heavy load could work well....

Anyone running it who could chime in?

I tried a 9x6 on my 20 and for me - the motor was underpowered =)

I say find someone who has one and try it out. Any friends use a 9x6?

you've got a short boat for that much of a load, so a 9x6 may push it better. the trade off being lower top end with just you in the boat. so which load is normal, and which is occasional?

Honestly its hard to say which is normal but this time of year being warmer we do more catfishing and flounder gigging the front deck i built is permanent so theres weight i added that wont come out and even when it turns cold and we go duck hunting there will still be a pretty decent load with deeks and gear and all so id say that a heavier will be a more common load in my boat. Wont a smaller pitch prop make me turn more rpm's though? Becuse im already turning about 4100 with a light load and 3950 with a heavier load.
