 GoDevil boat mod
i have a 1644 godevil boat. i have cut out the foam in the bow so i'm pretty sure that i have destroyed its' ability to float. i was thinking about also cutting out the flotation pods in the back too. but i'm not sure if the pods are part of the structure of the boat. (kinda like the boat Crews had) but if i did go ahead and do this and i did happen to sink it would my insurance still pick up the tab since i removed the flotation?

 Re: GoDevil boat mod
Not sure about the insurance part. I have also removed the foam from my bow. One of my next projects is to cut open the pods on the sides. I'm gonna remove all the foam from them and make them into storage compartments. I never really thought about what my insurance would think about my removing the foam until I read your post.

 Re: GoDevil boat mod
Med,
The 16x44 started with foam in - nose - under floor - inside pods...
If it is an older model the floor foam is the most likely to be water saturated, but it is also somewhat structural as it is cut to fit tight between the aluminum sheets - about $75 for new replacement foam from GoDevil...
My guess is that insurance would cover you with or without floatation they cover acts of stupidity (not aimed at you) and 16 year old drivers all the time - just not intentional damage or losses...
Only GoDevil could tell you if the pods are structural - but I bet they are to some degree...

 Re: GoDevil boat mod
it's a 2000 model boat with bench across the middle. last year i pulld the floor to check the flotation and it was ok except for a piece in the rear. i went to the local builder supply and they had the hard 2 inch white foam insulation so i bought that and replaced it all. i would have left it out but that stuff was super cheap and that beat having to buy new thicker metal to replace the floor. i cut out nearly all of the foam in the nose so i could store my gas tank. i may give gd a call today and ask them about the pods in the back to see if they are structural. i really like the boat but i could use a little more room especially when hunting the river. even when i hunt alone it doesn't take long to fill up a boat with dekes, layout, etc. the boat crews used to run didn't have the rear flotation. i think he told me a dude from gd built the boat that way for his personal rig. i never saw it in person so i don't know if it had extra bracing in it though.
