Post Puppy question
Hey fellas been working my puppy for a month or so and I've got him to fetch very well , and he will fetch from the boat and swim through the decoys no problem and I'm putting a small drop of duck sent on his dummy and he go's ape shit over it. I've been getting him to use his nose to find his dummy that I've hidden from him. I've also been working with him on sit stay and come . And for the most part he's not doing bad But as of lately he will not come to me when I comand him , is this a harder part of the training or is it that he's still young and I've not been working long enough yet , do they start to listen better as they mature along with the training. One more question are teal season starts Sept 25 and he will be about about 6 to 7 month old if he's willing to retrieve a teal during season should I let him or is he to young still.

First things first, Question #1...we need more info.
How old is your dog?
Have you used a jerk line w/ him?
Have you been training him on a whistle?

Second ?...This all depends on the dog and work you have done IMO.
Have you conditioned him to guns?
This is very, very important. More dogs are ruined because they were not properly prepared for the situation of a real hunting situation.
I had a pup that had been trained w/ a 22 and 12 gauge. Opening day of dove season she was doing great, marking and making numerous retrieves. I am so proud...along come cousins and friends when shooting slowed after an hour or so. Group of birds fly over and 8-10 guns went off and she tried to crawl under my stool.
Moral of this little story is good preparation and conditioning makes good hunting dogs...lack of said preparation can render them a couch ornament.
I am not a professional by any means. Just what I have learned w/ a few Ive had.

Sounds like you're moving along pretty quick. Back up and work him on a check cord and "reel" him in. Praise, praise, praise. Take him hunting as long as you keep it fun and the guns don't bother him.

He's 5 months old , no have not worked with the whistle or the check cord , what did the other post mean about you the check chord to reel him in. I'm getting a blank pistol tomorrow and I'm going to slowly start to work him with the pistol when we are fetching , I've been working on making noise with pots and pan while he's eating I've also been smacking 2x4s together when he's eating also I know it's not much but I was told it will help. I did get some videos and they helped alittle but it seemed they didn't cover what to do if your dog was not doing what it was told , even though the puppys they are using seem very well trained at there age they didn't cover the what if your dog don't listen how to correct this problem. Before i go to far I did try a 20 small rope and when I told him to sit he would but when I told him to come he wouldn't this is where I think you are talking about the check cord mabey correct me if I'm wrong, but I felt like I was dragging him to me so I stopped before I did something wrong or start the wrong way.

Also quit making all kinds of rack it when hes trying to enjoy his dinner u wouldn't like someone slapping around crap in ur ear when ur eating normal work noise outside in a distance is differnt than slapping stuff all around rite by him why he is enjoying his meal an for the dummy pistol it's made for someone to stand in the field and shoot why they throw the bird bumper whatever u use so don't ruin him before he even has a chance and also there is a correct way to put on a choke chain very important

6 months and 2 yrs. He is trying you.
Get the book WATER DOG and read it...twice. This is a very good place to start.
As far as taking a pup in the field...let your dog tell you when they are ready.
Please do more than a cap pistol and pots and pans though. This is setting your dog up to fail.

5 months old the dog needs to be in obedience training. Sit, Heel, Here. Use pinch collar/ choke collar and whistle. 1 blast means SIT, toot toot toot means here.... Use a check cord to MAKE the dog come here, then praise.
If you want a hunting dog follow a training program and Stick to it. if you slack off you will have gaps and your dogs performance will reflect it.

I got the Chris akin DVD, my pup is 5 months old also... She wasn't doin good on here if she was in the back yard playing around, used the 20-30 ft cord and worked with her a few times, she does a lot better...

And I also did away with the "stay" command.. She picked it right up.

Do yourself a huge favor. Order Vic Barlow's book, " British Training for the American Retriever". It is an easy read and really breaks down the ob stuff for you (pack mentality, sit, here, heel, stay). There are several books out there and a ton of videos. There are also a bunch of different methods of retriever training. Dont get caught up in the weeds trying to figure all that out right now. The main thing you have to work out is the ob training first. He has to know your the boss before he ever goes to the field with you. If you dont get that part right he will make you, and everyone hunting with you crazy. Your moving a little fast, slow down a little and be consistent in his training.

Good luck

How is it going w/ your pup?
If you have started studying you have probably answered a lot of your earlier ?'s. Obedience is the first step to being successful in training your dog. Hope you are seeing some improvement.

Glad to see you are seeing results. Time is key. If I was workign my lab everyday right now I'd want to be in swimby, But that just isnt happening. Maybe one day i can Teach the double Tee and then work on transisitons, cheating marks, then cold blinds.. TIME TIME TIME.

Time is the key. Some dogs pick up things quicker than others and some pick it up but are too hard-headed to use it. Glad you are seeing results. You want a dog that will behave whether you compete or not. Keep working and good luck.
