Post New Hopkins 12x13 heavy cup on 1851 excel swf4
Ok guys, read a lot of forums on the Hopkins being crapshoot, but I rolled the dice on one.
Boat info: 1851 excel swf4 .125 gauge short transom
Short shaft 36pd stock
The boat brand new was running 28-29 with just me. I was down to 22-24 with my old stock prop. Now I put this new one on and can't get my speed above 24ish and my rpms are at 3300. If I trim it up more, I can get about 3400, but no more speed just a lot of tiller torque. So my question, why can't I get my rpms up with just half of my prop in the water, which is the way I always ran my stock prop? It seems to me that maybe a bigger carb? I don't know.

I talked with glen at Hopkins several times and what I took from the conversations we had us that the prodrive stock prop isn't the best/ correct prop for the actual motor itself??? Have you ever heard this before ? I just wish I could get my rpms up back to around 3850 to 3950 like I did with my stock prop

God I wish I would have bought a stock prop now. Do I have any options? Would a carb kit do any good. More fuel might get rpms up ?

Hopkins will rework them for free as long as you can prove you bought it from them. If you buy a used one and need it reworked I believe it is $60.

How much?

Glen was really helpful and all. That being said is why I bought his prop. When he told me the stock prop on the prodrive wasn't even the correct prop for the motor out of the factory, I said we'll that's a no brainer. He did tell me to play with my weight distribution in the boat, which I did, with no help. I know these excel boats are very heavy, and now I'm wishing I would have just bought a hopped up mud buddy. Is there any other options up to And including sacrificing my left nut to get my boat back above 28mph with this prop?

No, you just don't have enough motor to turn it. You'd need to be slinging that thing well above 4000rpm to be able to see the gain of a 13p prop, and thats even pushing it. I've got a stage 2 and I can barely turn the Hopkins I have above 4300. I just bought a Prodrive prop and am back running above 31mph again. Glen doesn't own prodrive, he runs a prop company that was dropped by prodrive and lost their business. You can ask an PD owner on here and they will tell you that their current Prodrive prop is the best. The prop game is an expensive one.

@kmoppert. So if I did the stage 2, I could get power to spin it at 4000? I would settle for 3900 lol. I know a stage 2 is rather costly and I have 175 hrs on my boat so do you think it would be worth it?

I don't understand what your getting at. You are trying to spend money on mods to work your way around a a few hundred dollar prop. You gonna ad mods to get the prop to run lol just buy you a stock prop and run 28 again no brainer. You say you wish you would have went with a modded mb so what you could turn a bigger prop lol

Well I was just trying to get answers and suggestion to the questions/problems I had. I'm just gonna eat this one and take it as a lesson learned. Also I was saying I've got 175 hours on the motor and thought about reworking the top end, but I'm not sure if its time. If it is time I would do the stage 1-2 or whatever beg necessary to get some life back in my motor. I'm still open for any other suggestions.
