Diesel- I like your idea of the 2048. That would be a good size I think for doing what you're doing. I think you also now have the answer as to why the motor wouldn't back up.

I give you a few tips. In grass reverse a little then forward right back into reverse. Don't let it wrap up in the prop. How do you do that your gonna ask ? Try what I say keep rpm's up on the high side. As soon as the grass wraps and motor starts vibrating its to late. Key thing is to not try to back up till the motor is vibrating crazy. It takes a second to go from forward to reverse. Doit till you get a good backwards motion going. Hammer down and get your out of water rpm's up to 4300-4350
