 Reverse
MMT members, lets share our thoughts and opinions about the reverse option on our engines for the people who are trying to decide if they should get it or not when they put the purchase on a new mudmotor.

 Re: Reverse
If you were tryin to decide between two regular outboard motors and you found out one does not have revese wouldn't dat make your decission easier. It's really a no brainer.

 Re: Reverse
I prefer my GD. I would like reverse because it is really a nice feature. But that thing is build like an absolute tank. Plus I ride a lot of timber at times at IMO that is where GD shines. When I run sand flats, reverse doesn't help me cuz by the time Im stuck I need a winch not reverse. We dont have too much veggies where i hunt so reverse really was never needed.

x2 -- winch and Danforth will get you outta any trouble @ under $100
reverse (and trim) --- just something else to break or cause trouble IMO

 Re: Reverse
Never without. This thread will proove that the vast majority ifnot all the people that say they will buy another w/o reverse are the one's that have never had it to begin with- I've been FPF before....ain't worth a crap when you CAN go backwards to- if GD offered reverse it would be the bestest reverse thangy ever invented for a MM

 Re: Reverse
On a surface drive ill always have it. But I've actually considered going back to a longtail ,which I would be ok without having reverse,if it wasn't for one of the places I hunt and the fun I have just cruising in my gtr. I'll end up having both one day. Reverse is deffantly not NEEDED BUT until you own one with reverse your never gonna understand how convienent it is.

 Re: Reverse
When you end up on a mud flat and you are grinding forward a couple of inches at a time and you have a hundred feet or more to go until you are in something you can run in.That is when the ability to grind foward back up, run at it grind more back up, wash out a hole to jump up and get her going. It has saved my azz and made a believer out of a few non reverse owners. That is what its for,a push pole will do you no good in those situations.
I will tell you one thing if I do break down or get stuck I have some friends that I can count on to come and get me at any time and any place and I would do the same for anyone.

 Re: Reverse
I say this people who say they don't need it is because they don't have it!! 99% of the people on here have run long tails and know what its like not to have reverse!!! So if your trying to defend what you have cause it doen't offer reverse by saying you don't need it them you are sadly mistaken!!And misssing out on a whole differant phase of Mud motoring!!

 Re: Reverse
I actually voted "yes" because the question said MM (not SD) and I was thinking about a LT. A LT has its place. I love my GTR and wouldnt have it without reverse. When I purchased it, the decision was between it and PD. I wouldnt consider any other SD becuase they lacked reverse and I knew I wanted it. When is someone going to build a 30 mph, load totin', hydro assist steering, LT? with reverse?

 Re: Reverse
I bet the average user puts maybe 40-50 hours a year on a motor and babys it as much as possible. The average guy that posts here and is ate up with runnning these things probably puts on at least 200+ hours a year just playing. Commercial users, no telling how many hundreds of hours a year they put on one. Those folks depend on a motor to make a living. How many you think are running GDs Giga?

 Re: Reverse
Ok folks, to keep this legitimate, good poll / post from going to shit. I've stepped in and trimmed some posts that took it off course and into the toilet. Don't be offended if your post(s) are gone.
This is a good poll so let's keep it on track.

 Re: Reverse
i've never had a motor with reverse so i realy don't know what i'm missing i guess. my first mm was a lt so going from that to my mb sd was a treat to say the least. my mb has done what i've asked it to so i can't complain about it really.......however if and when i buy another mm it will probably have reverse.

 Re: Reverse
I am one of the guys who has run nothing but godevils, so of course id like to defend my purchase. But i will say there have been plenty of times the reverse would be convenient, launching the boat in current or heavy wind, push off of the shore etc. Off topic but there has been plenty of times i wish i had the power trim to hold the prop down. But where i run 98% of the time not having either doesnt make a difference. The other 2% just become an inconvenience. Cant speak for the reliabilty of the other motors but i can speak for gd's reliability and i chose what i knew. And the ultimate reason i chose the gd- price. Everybodies got their own opinion but the extra grand saved is worth a couple hours manual labor every now and then I hunt primarily the texas coast and east texas and have yet to get stuck where reverse could have dug me a trench or pulled me back. When ive been stuck its been dried out mud or sand. i love the gd and it aint let me down yet, but when i get old and lazy like the rest of you geezers i might get some reverse.

 Re: Reverse
I'm not knocking GD but coco did not invent the MM they have been running them in jungles for decades, when I was a kid my uncle told me about seeing them when he was in Vietnam. He just started making and selling them here first. I have been running gd's since 89' from 5 to 35 hp surface drives and long tails so I know what they are about and like I've said here dozens of times I like what I have for what I do. And thats all I have to say bout that.

 Re: Reverse
I ran Mudbuddy short tails for four hunting seasons. I am on my second season running a Prodrive with FPR. I use this feature a lot, and not just for getting out of "hairy" situations. I would never have another shorttail without reverse. And I prefer the power of FPR to the slight convenience advantage of instant reverse. Different strokes for different folks, I guess...I might feel different if I used the boat to fish. Unless you have had time to play with FPR there is no way you can understand all that can be achieved with this feature.
My .02. Out.

 Re: Reverse
How do all of you reverse experts that don't actually have a reverse know that it won't help you when you get stuck?
Leave the 2" water hard sand, dry ground BS out of this....we all get stuck in other situations...if you haven't...you stay in the boat lanes w/ the pontoons.
So...how do you know??

I'll add....I've got 5-1/2 years exp w/ motors w/o reverse 3 on a longtail, 2-1/2 on a MB Hyper....2+ w/ PD FPR all in the same areas...I know what one w/ the feature can and can't do vs one without.

 Re: Reverse
T-Mac, you nailed what I was trying to say. I am not going to grind a prop down trying to get the boat out of a sand flat, running backward or forward. But there are many other ways and places to get stuck, and I love my FPR in those places.

 Re: Reverse
T-mac i dont know if you were directing ur question towards me or not. But if so, my post wasnt to declare my knowledge of mudmotor reverse. Just to say that in my opinion its not worth the cash. And that is exactly what it is an opinion. if i was spending 15 grand on a boat it better have all the bells and whistles but i aint and probably never will. unless theres a 496 levitator sitting in it .
