I'll be putting spray rails on my 13X36 surface drive skiff in a day or two but I cant decide exactly where to mount them. Pretty much everything is pointing to putting them down low as close to the chine as I can get. BUT, I dont need any lift from them and they arent very wide anyway. I just want to stop the water from climbing up the sides. My boat is very small and narrow so consequently it rides pretty deep in the water with a load. I dont want them so low they wont do any good. Would they be okay about 3 or 4" above the chine? Or do they pretty much HAVE to be down at the chine (like the ones on Forever Draggin's inboard) to work?

a local builder does his like this...buddy had a 1750 with a 35 sd on it...added the rails and you could tell the difference

I would hate to take a wave over the back of that thing it would be like watching the titAnic go down just a lot faster there is no way I would load anything in there in fact I don't think I would take it out of 6 " of water

@Freshwaterkilla, it's not as bad as it looks. The main problem right now is pray coming in when I'm hauling ass with a load and not being able to reach the plug to drain it out. Once I get the bilge pump hooked up she should be a lot safer in open water. The spray is more of an issue filling the boat with water than waves.

Aka. Dont stress over the transom. If I remember right he has a splash well right in front of it.

He even had a hole in it ne that he put duck tape over to stop sinking.

Get some 5 lb density foam. Glue pannels together to get about 1 1/2 thickness. Cut your pannel out in the shape of the rail you want. I would go gunnel to inch and a half off the bottom. Glue on with waterpruff contact cement. Sand the side of the boat first. then cover with a couple layers of cloth (mat would be to heavy} Fair and paint. Does the stern taper back from midship if so it won't plane like a modern hull. That boat was made to run a aircooled motor as a inboard.


I ran a 11 hp gd long tail on mine. I ldecked it over like a old style duck boat. I used rubber rope to hold grass in place. Too old to hunt like that now, but killed a lot of ducks out of that rig.

That little hull would hull ass, with a sloped motor mount / low transom set up , a 16 hp briggs, A pump housing and straight shaft, a prop made to run surface. 20+ mph it was faster than a Go-devil. They ran across wet mud with a good prop. If you were in more than 6" of water You were in danger of sinking.

HOOOOO-LEEEEEEEEE-SHITTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!! Trust me when I tell you that you NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER want to fuck with PVC rails. I just got done putting them on tonight. I bought them almost 2 months ago and I've been fighting to get them to straighten out since then. The asshole I bought them from shipped them rolled up. Then I had to cut it lengthwise to get the contour just right which was damn near impossible to do since it never really straightened out. Drilling and countersinking the holes was relatively painless. But getting those wiggle worm motherfuckers on straight was a fight! They look pretty damn nice now that they are on, but I will NEVER do that shit again!!!!

yes! I was kicking myself in the ass all day yesterday for not having went the simple route and bought some 1.5" angle. Much cheaper and much easier to install.

Did you put spray rails on, did they help? The rails I added to my rig made a huge difference. I draw 3" or 4 " less . It climbs much higher and runs dryer. Get some 5 lb foam in a 4x8 sheet. rip out 4 -12" wide 8' long panels glue two together, then cut to shape. Glue to the hull class over and fair. Jefferson fiber glass added similar rails to a later hull made for the Rodrigue Motors and hulls.

Yeah, I put them on last night and ran the shit out of it today. It made a world of difference. Much drier ride and it turns a million times better.
