Mud Slide low friction bottom coating review
Price: $59.95 (1qt) Chemical Name: Mud Slide Low Friction Coating Synonyms: Slick bottom finish, Low Friction Bottom Coating Detailed Product Description: This is a proprietary polyester resin-based bottom finish, specifically formulated to minimize friction on the bottom of aluminum or fiberglass air boats. Its consistency is similar to the flow coat (clear gel coat) used as a final finish on the inside of race boat hulls. It includes surface curing additives, gloss additives, and most importantly, dry film lubricants that saturate the full thickness of the coating. Appearance: Mud Slide will produce a coating with a gun-metal gray color. Background: Unlike conventional boats where the challenge is to simply reduce the frictional drag of water, air boats have the unique challenge of needing to be able to glide smoothly over pond lilies and other marine growth. Over the years, enthusiasts have experimented with a number of bottom treatments to reduce the risk of dynamic fouling and to improve their speeds over these growths. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So I put this on my boat a while back and I have enough time on it to give it a review.
Basically this stuff is more or less a fiberglass resin with a shit ton of graphite and slippery stuff and unicorn farts mixed in. It is marketed mostly toward the airboat crowd and they claim it is tough as hell and wont come off for love or money. I chose this stuff over gator glide because I was hoping it would be a little tougher and abrasion resistant because where I run there is usually a lot of oyster shells, concrete, and debris.
It didn't take me long to realize that this shit is absolutely NOT tougher than gator glide. It chips very easily and scratches fairly easily too. The good part is when it chips and scratches it doesn't affect the performance (at least not that I could tell).
It is slick as hell. I can't go down any but the most gradual of ramps without at least one strap on the boat. Today I really got to see how slick this stuff is..... I was trying to make it across a big sand bar (about 2' high by 50'ish across) with about 2-3" of mud covering the sand. It wasn't enough for the prop to get a bite but as long as I made it over the apex, the mud slide was slick enough that it would slide down the back side with the vibration of the engine.
All in all, I give it a B+. Pros: Super slick and doesn't lose performance due to chips and scratches. Cons: It's pretty delicate.

I don't blame you...... I don't think it's any better. (although not really worse either.)
Hopefully my damn youtube link will start working soon.....

Re: Mud Slide low friction bottom coating review
That's the price for 1 quart. (And they charge more for shipping than GG) I only ended up saving a few bucks over GG. I was mostly shooting for durability..... (and missed)

Re: Mud Slide low friction bottom coating review
What size boat did you do?
Normal prep work?
How much do you have in the job start to finish?
In the damaged spots, do you think it could be touched up relatively easily?

Re: Mud Slide low friction bottom coating review
13~36 skiff Just a light sanding for prep on fiberglass\gelcoat. They sent me some aluminum etcher for free with my order. I forget the total price but it's on their website. I used a quart and it made for a pretty thick coat.
I tried to do thin coats but the second coat beaded up like rain x. The secind coat ended up being super thick but smooth as a baby's ass. Its so slick it doesnt want to stick to itsself for the second coat at first. Overall it was extremely easy to apply.
Yes the damaged spots could be touched up very easily but there is no need to touch up. The spots are very small. I put 3 more hours on it and no more came off si it might have been caused my oyster shells\concrete\debris. It might be tougher than i give it credit for. I got stuck in the refuge the other day and i could push the boat with 2 fingers across the mud.
