Post Boykin tackles first geese
We killed 6 geese and 14 ducks today in the marsh near Smith Point. We hunted 2 dogs today. My boykin, Ike, is in his second season and figuring things out. Today he picked up his first, second and third geese, a snow, a speck , and a ross. It was a good day in the marsh. Ike did not know quite what to do with the first goose but with a little encouragement, he got the idea and never looked back. A mature snow or speck is quite a load for a boykin in marsh mud. Ike was not complaining, just hoping for more.

Awesome looking Dog there! How is his disposition compared to a Lab?

Post Re: Boykin tackles first geese
I had 2 labs for combined 27 years and loved them, hunted them and they were our family pets, but they knew that they were dogs. The Boykin has no clue that he is really a dog. He has a personality like a person, is demonstrative in showing it to you and wants to be with you and do what ever you are doing. He has a softer demeanor and gets his feelings hurt easier than a lab, and takes very little discipline to get a point across. This one came born with a much greater drive to retrieve and love for the water than his 2 lab predecessors. Probably just variations in these specific dogs, but for sure he has more want to retrieve than either of the labs that I have owned. Size makes him a lot easier to be in the house and I will probably get another one sooner rather than later. I like both breeds but the Boykin is a better combination pet/ retriever. My wife thinks so anyway.

Is he pure Boykin? Weight? Is the long hair high maintenance? Man, that is one fine dog!

There great dogs, have there advantages being small, but also have disadvantages in tall grass seeing the handler. Love to have one though

Great dogs! Here's mine at 6mo last weekend already at it. He hasn't missed a hunt since he was 4months/early goose season.

I can't imagine a little boykin sheds near as much as a lab. They are much smaller and since they are a spaniel their hair doesn't fall out continuously like a lab. Plus, I'm pretty sure boykins only have a single coat.

I'm only talkin bout how much hair falls off of one. I don't own one so I can't say for sure.

Its hard to beat a Boykin! I agree totally that you educate them and not train them. ALL Boykins are naturally great dogs, I have never seen one that is not smart. Good looking pup!

Going to be hard to explain...... training is by repetition and learning is by rote......
boykins seem to want to know "why" they are doing it.......

Mine must be unusual. They seem to do fine with "training". The ones that are being educated, what are y'all doin with them? Just hunting? Can you handle them? Will they run blinds? Hunt test? Field trials?
