 To V, or not to V!?!
Am getting real close to pulling the trigger on an 1854 build, am hung up on whether or not to have a V hull. Will primarily be hunting Missouri river, shallows, and occasional big lake/reservoir. GT site says no big difference will be seen in shallows with mod v, but I know you don't have as much planing surface either...I guess the question is, if you could have it your way, what would you do to create that happy medium for multiple environments?

Do not waste money on mod v, get a hybrid. A mod v is a pure headache with mudmotor. Believe me i know, had one. Now i have a custom prodigy vrake being built

a mod v is a v the whole length of hull, a hybrid..vrake is a v only on the rake (front of bow) and flat rest of hull. A mod v drafts allot of water, also you get hung up on that one point of contact rather than whole width of boat

Got it, is the angle of the v rake completely determined by the builder? Do you recommend a particular angle that still does what a v rake is supposed to do but acts best for "mud boat" situations?

Like dmax said get a hybrid! I love mine. I had a Mod-v before this hybrid custom and I hated it. It was hard to get on plain, drafted to much water. They just dont do well with MM. If you are going to be hunting the miss river you need something to break the wake. Cottonmouth customs makes a fine hybrid!

viewtopic.php?f=7&t=48345Check this link for photos of my hybrid v-pad design. The v only comes into play in waves, and may even help break a little suction in the mud. The rake of the bow is important, to much you loose shallow water performance and load capacity. The boat was 17x50 and the rake started too far back. When I weighted 180 and was running longtail 25 at 180lbs the rig was unstoppable, and fast for a long tail. I put a 35 gdsd on it and it was fine with a lite load , but was sticky in the mud and did not due well with my hunting load. I added 3" of width via a spray rail/lift scate. When I added 3/4" pad height I add a foot of running surface by flatting out the rake-v transition. I also adde 6" to the back. I now run as fast with my hunting load as I did when I was light before the mods. Thats with the boat 150 lbs heavier after the mods. It is no longer sticky in the mud runs higher on the water and is much dryer. Getting a hull to perform well is a blending of many things. The length, width, rake , weight to horse power ratio are more important than performance mods like v's and PADS that help in some ways but can hurt in others. True mud hulls are not good rough water boats. If you are long enough and light enough to stay on top a litttle v will soften the ride a little, proper spray rails near the chine and on the gunnel will make it run dryer. JD

I have asked a similar question and got mixed replies. I think half the guys responding consider the mod-v to have a v the length of the boat like posted above. Others understand a mod v to have the modified v bottom just at the front and then going to a true flat bottom. The latter is how I've always understood a mod v to be set up. I have based that belief on the fact that my Lowe 1448m is described by the manufacturer as a mod v jon. I personally think it is a little smoother ride than my buddy's flat fronted Jon. I also like how it parts the cattails when I'm hunting. I plan on going from 1448 to 1648 and can't see how there would be a disadvantage with the mod v. Less slap when there's a chop and parting the weeds instead of flattening them under you when getting in the taller thick stuff. Just my 2 cents and I am glad to see others have my same questions bouncing around their heads.

Hybrid all the way. My rig has the "v" only in the front rake then it is flat all the way back. Sure does split the waves and the spray away from me on rough water. Only way to go IMO....

17' and under, go hybrid if you think you really need it. Over 17', you don't need it. The boats will handle the waves and rough water just fine.
I was on the fence and had even decided to go hybrid when I placed my order. About a week before Jason started on my build, I took a PD 1860 across Caminada Bay in some serious conditions. Boat was long enough to where the boat never dipped in and out, rode mostly on the wave crests, did not beat me to death and I stayed dry. It convinced me I did not need the hybrid and saved myself $400 on the build.
I have since put mine through ICW, LA coastal bays, been outside the jetties on not so calm days, big lakes in MS....no regrets on not going hybrid. I haven't ridden in a hybrid to have a comparison...but, I haven't seen where I would have gained anything by going hybrid, either.
