 First rig what to expect
Just pieced together a rig (boat, trailer, and motor were all bought separately) 18x44 GD with a 25 horse kohler long tail on it. I've ran a few long tails belonging to friends over the past few years some quicker and some better handling than others. But just wondering if anyone has run this particular setup. Had to order seals and bushings for the motor so I missed getting to use the boat in duck season and now it's a little chilly to be out joy riding but I hope to get it on the water soon and find out how it does. In the mean time i figured I would ask to see if anyone has experience with this setup.

I have a GD hull 18x44 with a 29 MBLT, I run about 15 mph with a light load, but is a beast in mud flats and shallow water...... It's not fast, but is a tank in shallow water/mud flats

I"m running an 1856 Go-Devil with 27hp Kohler GDLT.
I see about 17-18 light load and maintain 15+ with 3 guys, gear, decoys etc. I love the setup for where I hunt.

I pieces my rig together. You can do it for cheap if you shop. Trailer was $500, year old pro drive with 80 hrs on it with auto reverse and power trim was $7000 and brand new hull was $6250

Re: First rig what to expect
Finally got this boat on the water for the first time today. Ran 16 shallow and 16 deep with me 6 gallons of gas and my two 65 lb and 70lb dogs. I'm sending the prop to GD this week to get reworked to 9x6. Currently a 9x5. Not unhappy with what I got but hoping I can pick up a couple mph with another degree of pitch.

What kind of RPM are you turning to decide you will gain from a repitch?

Re: First rig what to expect
Different manufacturers recommend about 3 different props for my Hp. I've ran all three and ended up doing something different than any of them to get the performance I wanted. It would be wise to find out more before you start dumping money on props that may or may not work like you want. The tiny tach is pretty simple. Two wires I believe. An inductive signal wire that you wrap around your spark plug wire and a ground. Make sure you have a good clean engine ground. This will help accuracy. Wrap the other wire 4-5 times on the plug wire and you should be all set. Figure out what it's turning when you're carrying your normal load and report back. That will determine what you should do prop-wise.

Re: First rig what to expect
I'd be lying if I guessed lol. It's been almost 2 yrs since I installed one. I would just play with the settings until it looks right at idle IMO. If all else fails find someone with a laser tachometer to check it. All it takes is a little piece of reflective tape and just crank it up and point the gun at it. I carry one at work. Super handy little tool in my line of work. I've used it on lawnmowers, trucks, motorcycles etc too.
My idle is set to about 1500 out of water and idle around 1000 in the water. Wide open unloaded approaches 4200 in shallow water light loaded.
