Post Repaint GD hull prep
I am going to respray my GD hull with the same paint. What is the best way to prep it for paint without taking it down to bare metal? & what is best to use to fill/smooth scratches?

The same paint? Doesn't go devil just color their boats in with green chalk?

Not sure about the scratches but for prep, just clean it, rough it up with an abrasive pad and wipe it down with acetone. If you're down to bare aluminum I'd suggest spraying those areas with an aluminum primer first.

How old is your hull just out of curiosity.

09 and it shows. The bottom has some deep scratches and some of the edges along the rail. I'm thinking just JB weld to fill em but I was curious to see if anyone has a better idea.

I don't have any deep scratches on mine yet but in the past on other aluminum boats I've sanded that area down to remove any sharp edges and used a little JB weld to fill the rest of the scratch. Then prep and paint over it.

Thanks to all for the info. That's what I planned to do but It's my 1st time prepping my boat for paint and just wanted to double check.

After 5 years of rocks in the river and oysters in the bay it has a few shred marks.

How's that 37 doing on the GD hull?
I put in my order for one today.

16hrs on my rig and not a single hiccup or regret. It runs very well. seems to actually be running a bit better than when it was brand new. I haven't loaded it down real heavy yet but I expect that it will do well. Be sure to post up when you get that 37. If you're swapping from a 35 to a 37 on the same type of frame and same hull you will probably have one of the best comparisons yet on the actual differences. I suspect your only regret will be not doing it sooner ;)

I won't have a very good comparison. I'll be yanking that GD off my boat this weekend and prepping for paint and gator glide. Then picking up a 37 GTR at the end of the month so it should be a night and day difference in the most extreme sense. I will be doing before and after pics though. I have yet to talk to someone with the 37 on a 16' hull so I'm curious to see those differences.

I'm Planning on selling just not right away. But the right offer could speed the process.

It doesn't look like I have too much paint to strip on the bottom.

You shouldn't have to strip it down to bare aluminum. Just clean it up really good.

I plan to strip just the bottom completely down to put on that GG. By the time i level the scratches most of the paint will be gone. The rest of the boat will be painted over.
