 Broke Fan-Flywheel
Anyone seen this happen before? Was just running down the bayou when all hell broke loose. One piece went flying through the plastic cover up about 30' in the air. As soon as it happened I shut the engine off. Any ideas on what caused this or is it that the plastic fan gets so hot that over time it developed a hairline crack and finally went? Does it look like I need anything else beside the fan? I did away with the studs and rotating screen and just used the outer screen. Also anyone in the SETX area know what they are looking at and wouldn't mind checking it out let me know. Thanks

 Re: Broke Fan-Flywheel
Happened to me, reason it did that is because you left the ring and studs out and if caused the fan to flex and break. I learned the hard way too.

Check your coils make sure nothing is busted up underneath the cover. Replace fan.

 Re: Broke Fan-Flywheel
Do not run it like that also.... It acts as a balance when spinning.. out of balance is a bad thing with the motors!!

 Re: Broke Fan-Flywheel
I dont know why, but for some reason those broken bolts always come out with little to no probems. I start by removing the flywheel, then drill the broken part out, and when I feel the drill bit start to bite I push a little harder and 99% of the time they spin out the other side of the hole........Just dont push so hard that you break a drill bit.
And X2 on what Duck Hearse said, check your coils very closely as well as the spark plug wires. Seen a few broken fans damage the coils before when they start whipping around.

 Re: Broke Fan-Flywheel
Left hand drill but will get the broken studs out.
Replace fan, ring and use regular bolts with blue loctite, flat washer and lock wager

I don't know if it will make you feel any better. But Briggs just stopped installing those grass shields on the marine edition motors.

 Re: Broke Fan-Flywheel
This is why this should be the first thing on anyone's list to do to there motor. Take the grass catcher out and cut the studs down and put them back in. Seen it a dozen times or more. Cheap insurance. http://204.197.244.166/~mudmotor/mmt_v2 ... =3&t=43639viewtopic.php?f=3&t=29361&start=0viewtopic.php?f=3&t=47371viewtopic.php?f=3&t=52918

I replaced that studs with bolts, i think m6. I kept the ring, used washers and lock washers along with blue locktite.

 Re: Broke Fan-Flywheel
When (not if) those studs break off, it can potentially cost $300 or more to fix everything they can tear up. The blower housing, flywheel cage, fan, coils, etc...

 Re: Broke Fan-Flywheel
Hopefully Boat dr will chime in but he told me those bolts will basically crush that ring so he takes the tower bolts and cuts them down where a socket will fit on the bolt. At least that's how I did mine from his suggestion.

 Re: Broke Fan-Flywheel
I just got new ss hardware with my ss bolts as lock washers and ss fender washers. Tightened until I saw washers begin to distort. Used blue loctite

 Re: Broke Fan-Flywheel
Those tower bolts have a shoulder for a reason regular bolts aren't gonna fill up the hole space in the fan shroud and support ring= gonna spell disaster at later date

If you have a little scale, you can weigh them after you cut them and make sure they are the same.
