Post Which steelflex (teflon or nonteflon)?
I was surfing around the internet and saw that a lot of people were using the regular steelflex, but Poker and a few others here on MMT used the teflon super slick SF. What gives? The regular stuff is cheaper, about 54/gallon and can be reapplied in multiple coats. The teflon stuff can only be applied in 1 coat and is about 100 bucks.

Also, if applying to a new boat without paint, do I need to do anything other than scuff the aluminum with 60grit sandpaper?

That was the information I was looking for. Thanks Poker!

Did you let the first coat dry before applying the second coat? How many hours did you wait? I am assumunig you didn't scuff the first coat, but just applied the second coat without any prep to the first coat?

It starts setting up pretty fast. But not to fast to be worried about. I think I did my second coat the next day and now that you ask I can't remember. But if you did one coat early in the morning you could probably do the second that afternoon. No scuffing the first coat. Just laid the second coat on top of it.

i'm in the process of knocking the steelflex off my boat. got so many coats on it i have filled up a bucket with chips and i'm 1/2way through.

apparently i didn't prep one of the coats good eneough and over time it has started to come off in peices and the bot is plowing water.

probly going to replace the bottom of the boat.

.

That is my concern. On the tinboat forum there is about a 30 page thread about steelflex and a couple people were saying that the teflon stuff is so slick that if you put one layer on, then you let it dry completely without scuffing it, the second layer won't adhere properly. They recommended putting the second coat on when it was still a little tacky. Could that have been your problem dead animal?

I did a boat a couple years back and I just dumped it straight out of the bowl i mixed it in. I put one coat thick as hell. It lasted great for running marsh and mud. Jumped a few logs but stayed away from rocks and hard stuff. After all, its a boat not a 4 wheeler. It greatly improved my performance in veggies. That stuff was like hot butter on the bottom of my boat. Have an airboat now with frog spit. If I had to do it over again it would deffinately be steelflex.

Tenpoint,
Was getting ready to order Frog Spit.... Why would you do steelflex instead?

Spoke with a guy at Fasco Epoxies (www.fascoepoxies.com) just recently and he told me that 1 coat of the Steelflex 9X-2000 was more than enough.
