I bought the Nat gear colors a few years ago. I used Mossy Oak break up stencils and it turned out great.

Post Re: Painting info
Instead of starting a new thread, I figured I would jump on this one.

I am painting a new boat with a basecoat. I am trying to get my hands on the kem400 from sherwin williams. Anyways, my questions was regarding the preperation. It has a white primer paint on it now and it has been on there for a couple years. What steps should I take to prep it for painting.

1. Pressure wash
2. Scrub well with dish soap
3. Pressure wash
4. Spray on Alumabrite, let soak 2 minutes
5. Pressure wash
6. Let dry
7. Paint

Does that sound OK? From my online searching, it looks like the alumabrite won't negatively affect painted surfaces. Where is the best place to get alumabrite...do they carry at automotive stores, paint stores?

Or you can spray it with regular ol vinegar and water half and half in a spray bottle, it etches and cleans the aluminum like no other, but trick is you have to let it sit for about 30min. to get the full effect and you can literally wash it off and see silver in your dirty water, its strong as hell but it get the job done like no other, just a trick of the trade i thought i'd pass on! ;)

You might take a look a ALK 200, which is made by PPG. It is an automotive grade paint and holds up very well. Make sure you tell them you need a flat sheen, so they can add the proper amount of talc. Best results are sprayed thru an HVLP or cup gun.

I buy it at a local automotive paint supply store. ALK 200 is a PPG product, (pittsburgh paints). I'm sure you have an automotive paint supply store in your area, check with them. It is very important that you clarify that you want a flat sheen. Most auto paints are sold with a high gloss or semi gloss sheen. They will add talc to tone it down and there are an endless amount of colors to choose from.

I am sure there are alot of other good products out there that some members here on mmt have used but this one has worked well for me. Whatever you choose, hope it works out and post some pics.

ucsdryder,

Go on www.sherwin.com and do a search to find a Chemical Coatings store. it is not your usual neighborhood S-W store. Call them and ask if they can sell you KEM-400. If you are hearing that it is not available in California the chances are you might just be getting bad info. Don't forego the option until you hear the bad news from a qualified person in the know.

I thought I was going to get lucky as there is a CC sherwin williams store about 15 minutes from me, but the guy at the store said that it wasn't available in California, but said that was an awesome paint...
