Milk Chocolate in my Lower Unit (PD)
I checked my lower unit oil today and could not open the lower plug. It wouldn't budge. When I opened the upper plug - thick chocolate milk came out. I drained what I could from the upper plug and added about a half of a quart of new oil. Any ideas on how to unstick the lower plug? Any ideas on how I am getting water in the lower unit?

Re: Milk Chocolate in my Lower Unit (PD)
What year is the lower unit? They changed the design in 08-09 I believe. The new style doesn't have as much of an issue. On the old style, you can try to replace the upper and lower seals, sometimes it will fix it, sometimes it won't.
To get the plug off, try some liquid wrench or some type of penetrating oil. Make sure you use the exact size tool for that plug, you don't want to strip it out.

I'm sure it's a 2008.

Does it have a grease fitting right around the area of the prodrive emblem stamped on the transom bracket? Bout 4 1/2 inches from the bottom of the bracket? The zerk is behind a plug. If your lower unit top fill plug is in that area, its an old style.

Get that plug as cold as possible I usually use Co2 cartridges and it probably will budge that way some people will say to use heat but anyone that knows anything about metal knows that heat expands metal

Sounds like a lower seal nut to me. At least that is what happened to mine

I bought a new seal. Will be putting it in tomorrow. Hopefully that will do it. I don't see any other way for the water to get in.

Re: Milk Chocolate in my Lower Unit (PD)
So that puts it above the water line right? Are we talking about under the area covered with velcro.?

Re: Milk Chocolate in my Lower Unit (PD)
Not a bad project but will take a little time to get the upper changed. However I bet it is the lower seal and that is an easy change. I would start there at any rate. You pull the prop and unscrew and remove the seal nut. Replace with new seal nut from PD and replace the prop.
