 Question On Trailer Bunk Length
I have a 1750 Gator Trax with the Hunt Deck on a Continental trailer made for 17 - 18 foot boats. Right now about 3" of the boat's rear are unsupported which I don't is that big of a deal but the bunks stop about 3' from where the bow begins to curve up. So should I get a different set of bunks that cover the full length of the boat's bottom or do you think I'm good like this? I'm just worried that I might get a hook in the bottom of the boat even though it seems like the majority of the weight is on the bunks now.

Re: Question On Trailer Bunk Length
YOu should be good, about a foot before the rake starts is where the bunk should stop, that way a mojority of the boat is supported

Re: Question On Trailer Bunk Length
Agreed. Just put new runners on mine. but extended out the back jus a couple inches to have the whole boat all the way to the rake on runners, Just that little bit hanging off shouldnt hurt like tak em said most all the weight is supported

Re: Question On Trailer Bunk Length
The weight is going to be back at the transom under the motor and would be the biggest concern. I wouldn't let the boat hang over the bunks at the transom. Forget the bunk set up. Get you some treated 2x6 and lay them down flat and bolt them right to the trailer frame. Chit can the harware and carpet. That will get your boat lower and give you much more support than a 2x4 standing on its side. It will also allow you to launch shallower. I also set my trailer up axle over on the springs and running 13" radial tires my hull still sits half as high as alot of trailers I see. I dont have to back down near as far that way.

Re: Question On Trailer Bunk Length
I have 12 foot 2 x 6 bunks on my 16' boat. Rebuilding the trailer was the first thing I did when I got the boat. It had 10' bunks when I got it and the transom hung about 4" off the back of them. I bought two 12' 2x6 and figured why cut 1' off of them. Bunks being too long towards the bow doesn't hurt anything. I thought about using bare wood, but with the pressure treating process used now it will eat aluminum. I used bunk glides made by Tie Down Engineering to cover the bunks. With the slicks the boat slides off easier than with bare wood. Still need to remove the bunk brackets though and drop the boat a little lower. With my 56" wide boat I'm gonna have to move the fenders out a little so they don't rub the hull. The axle is already over the springs so that drops the boat a good 4" or so. Having a well set up trailer makes life much easier.

Re: Question On Trailer Bunk Length
Thanks for your help guys, right now the boat only has two bunks. I was thinking about adding a third right down the middle to support the bow, do you guys think this would work or should I just replace the two bunks as well so I have 3 12 foot bunks?

Re: Question On Trailer Bunk Length
to me that trailer looks like it is too short for that boat. from the pic it looks like your boat overhangs the rear about a foot, on mine the bunks come past the boat an inch or so. might wanna make em longer to more support the front. did u get that trailer from gator trax?

Re: Question On Trailer Bunk Length
It's the angle on the camera that makes them look short, there's only about 2-3" of overhang but I'm going to take the trailer to the dealer and put longer bunks in. I got the trailer from a dealer here in Miami.

Re: Question On Trailer Bunk Length
You definitely need longer bunks. I'd use 12' bunks for that boat. If the trailer width allows it I would drop the bunk brackets as low as possible also. You could even remove the bunk brackets all together and mount your bunks to the galvanized cross members.

Re: Question On Trailer Bunk Length
The easiest thing you can do, is go to a fab shop, and ask to have your tongue exteded by 6' or so. If you would bring it to me, I would cut the tongue, add a smaller Square tubing into the inside, then put a spacer of the same size, then your original tongue back on.

Re: Question On Trailer Bunk Length
You'd be surprised how many ducks we have here. Last year was real bad in the area I hunt locally which is called Holiday Park but Lake Okeechobee is usually very good, especially during the beginning of the season. The problem we have here is that the water management district has these areas called STA's ( Storm Water Treatment Area) which are duck heaven. They only allow hunting on them 1 or 2 days a week and are full of hydrilla so thick you can walk on it. So naturally all the duck stay there instead of migrating to the places that get hunted every day. There are thousands upon thousands of ducks in those STA's and as a result, the hunting tends to be poor in the surrounding areas.
I went to Lake Okeechobee for early teal this season and was surprised by the quality of the hunt. This was my first year going there since no outboard can go to the places I was hunting in and I hit my limit in less than 15 minutes. I've never seen so many teal, not even in the STA's so I will definitely be scouting there in the next few weeks.

Re: Question On Trailer Bunk Length
There's ducks in the Glades. Problem is most of the hunters hunt the cuts off the L-67 out of Holiday Park. There's 700,000 acres of Everglades and most of the hunters stay in areas that are too deep for puddle ducks because they are running outboard boats.

Re: Question On Trailer Bunk Length
I've got honey holes at the lake also. Get more variety at the lake, but if I'm looking for teals, ringers, and mottleds I have places in the Glades that don't require near the drive.
