Post Flat paint
Where do you boat builders get your flat paint. I want to lay down a new base coat before I do a camo styx job. I am not talking about the paint from Wally world, I want some good stuff. The local paint retailers around here scratch their head when you ask for flat base paint other than black. Went thru this a couple years ago trying to paint a deer lease Ram charger OD green. Help would be appreciated.

Thanks Deadbird. When I go to my local Sherwin Williams store, they don't know what I am talking about wanting flat base paint. Is KEM400 flat? Is it only available in one color?

KEM 400 is a semi gloss when dry. The SherwinWilliams paints that PD uses comes from the INDUSTRIAL side of Sherwin Williams. There are not many INDUSTRIAL locations. Houston & Baton Rouge are the locations nearest me. There might be one in Dallas, just not sure.

You might be able to get a flatining agent for the KEM 400 also. You would just have to check with the paint supplier.

The Sherwin locations that will give you the best info on KEM 400 and other suggestions for this application are the Chemical Coatings stores. These are not the same as neighborhood SW store. These guys custom blend and supply wood and metal finishing coatings for manufacturers. Their knowledge of these specialized coatings are many times that of your average Sherwin store's knowledge.

Search for your nearest Chemical Coatings store here:

They have the Industrial Coatings in Dallas and Chemical Coatings in Garland (near Dallas). On KEM 400, the Industrial coatings store would not mess with anything under 5 gallons.

My neighborhood store did have the KEM400 Color chart and it does come in about 8-10 standard colors. They could special ordered it for me.

Correction on my above post.

The KEM 400 is a flat paint from Sherwin Williams. I was thinking of the ALK 200 that is another brand that is semi gloss.

Sherwin should be able to blend the KEM 400 to any custom color you want. I know for a fact that the paint that Gatortrax and Legendcraft use are both custom blended Sherwin colors. At one point in time I got (with Gatortrax's blessing) the formula for their color in order to have some made at my local Sherwin Chemical Coatings store.

You said you wanted the "good stuff", go to your auto paint store, such as car quest paints. they mix any color under the rainbow. they sell a flattener that comes in pints, it will make their paint duller than mud. the more flattner you add, the duller it gets. thier paints are a two part mix. i just got through doing this.
