Best way to house train a dog?
Well I will be getting a puppy in January
Its been years since I had a puppy (like 20 years lol)
I always just rubbed their nose in it and smacked em on the ass --- I dont want the dog to be scared of me and it seemed like my dogs in the past were kinda scared of me a little bit,
Any help is appreciated

X2 on the crate, they will not sht where they gotta sleep. And when they go to pi$$ on the floor while you're letting them run around in the house, scream at that lil futhermucker so loud that he'll lock up and reverse stream. Then kindly place them outside.

Confine to a crate when you are not paying attention to them. They may go in the crate a time or 2 in the beginging but usually will not go in their bed. Take them out alot because just like any baby they are not in control of their bowle at that age. Get you some of the puppy pads and place next to the kennel. They pick up on that really quick and it absorbs urine and keeps it off the floor. We have tile and wood floor so no carpet issues. Pick up the food and water bowl so they can't free drink all the time. Its not a big deal to get them used to going outside. And if you watch them close they will tell you when they need to go by their body language. Yelling can make them skiddish around you with some dogs. A firm "NO" will get their attention. Alot of heaped on praise when they go outside works wonders.

Re: Best way to house train a dog?
Crating is definitly the way to go. One other thing you may try that hasnt been mentioned is if using puppy pads move them closer to the door everyday until there finally outside. And if they piss on the floor use a old rag to clean it then take that rag and put it outside where you want them to do there business. When you take them outside bring them to this pissy rag make them smell it and tell em to do their business. After a time or two they will put the two together. Hope this helps ya out.

Re: Best way to house train a dog?
Last 2 replies pretty much hit it. We had ours in a medium crate. He never messed in it, but the minute you let him out, we had to take him straight outside. Sometimes I carried him out cause he would take too long. Even if he had an accident, I never fussed him. Just took him outside. At first he will make accidents. Just be patient and don't get mad. I made it a point to take him out ever 3-4 hours. When he was 3-4months, it got to where he could stay in all night. Now he has a bigger kennel. When he is let out he goes straight outside and does his thing. When he's got to go out, he nudges me and wimpers, then goes by the back door. Take your time and never raise your voice or get mad. Especially, do not hit.

Re: Best way to house train a dog?
i didnt read everything everyone wrote, but i put mine in a super small crate. i would take him out all the time. he pissed and shit in the crate a lil bit at first, but they get the hang of it pretty quick. when they piss or shit outside, acknowledge they did something great. when u take it out the crate immediatly take it outside. use the same spot. then ur good to let pup roam for 10 or 15mins and then i put drake back in the crate. after 2 weeks he would bark when he needed to go.

Re: Best way to house train a dog?
Brad i got a new pup 6wks ago and this is my second dog ive house trained. Everything they say about the crate train is 100% correct, you have to get one small enough because a dog will not sh!t/p!ss where they sleep. Bring the dog to the door and ask them if they wanna go outside, get them excited to where they will bark, this will help out later when they bark in the house and you go to find them sitting by the door. If they do mess in the house a stern "no" and a good rub of their mess in the nose then immediatly outside. Has worked for my family for a long time!
Good luck

Re: Best way to house train a dog?
Easiest thing i found was buy the puppy pads that smell like grass, those are cool, other than that spank

Re: Best way to house train a dog?
While you are at it train him to go on command. As he starts to go say the command. I use "hurry" but I think "Get 'er done" would have been better. At some point he should associate the command with the action.
