how do sds hold up in saltwater. say catchin red in grand isle. i think a stainless steel hook will rust there.

I am wondering the same thing, I am in Southwest Florida and am considering a mud boat/surface drive but am concerned about corrosion.

got some rusty hooks in da boat and not too much rust on ma engine,so id have to say,they hold up better than a hook.
it also helps to rinse it off with fresh water after too.

I have a hard time understanding how or why anyone who spends their $$$ on somethin won't take care of it. Furthermore, how can they blame their problems with rust, corrosion, etc on the manufacturer. I don't care is it's a MB, GT, PD, GD, BT, or a fuggin Saltwater series OB, if you don't rinse the salt water off of it, it aint gonna last, but if you'll spend 10 mins rinsing it off with the hose at home, it will last as long as you keep it.

I mean, do you ppl ever clean your guns or change your oil?

I've seen sd's that sit in saltwater with barnacles on the skegs that run fine. These are motors that guides use down here that stay in the water most of the year. Take care of your shit and it will be fine.

I have been running mud motors for about 8 years now and as long as you take the 10min to wash then off when you get back it will last a long time. I have been running my current motor for 6 years now and the only thing i had to change was one exhaust due to cracking and thats it.

X2 on putting the rinse on your mudmotor or anything of that sort, Salt water is the devil and i don't care what it is salt will eventually get to it. Reels, motors, push poles, shot guns, and trailer. Rinse it all off, sure it won't take effect immeditaly but wait a couple years and the trailer will come apart right underneath your boat or that reel will quit casting or your lower unit will fall off your motor, or you gun will jam because of corrosion, duck bill fall off the end of your push pole, all these are critical and expensive accessories not to put the hose on after you get through using them in salt water.


I had a long tail before my surface drive for about 6 years, rinsed it off everytime it came out the water, friend had the same rig and always said the trailer's galvanized its not going to hurt it, yeah 2 years later i am over there cutting old rusted leaf springs off and welding new brackets, and replacing fenders. So as far as cost goes, taking alittle time to rinse it off and grease it and spray it down with some sort of lubication can save you alot of money in the long run.

Just Saying

I'd say rinse it down for a while and then get that marine spray. its used for saltwater boats and spray it on it should last you a lifetime. and stay away from wd40. that chit is actually corrosive. i dont use it on my guns or any boating equipement nor or my fishing reels. only for hinges and dumb stuff around the house its good.

for guns use gun oil
for reels use the reel oil (like shimano)
for boats use that marine spray. its friggin fantastic. i have a bottle of the stuff (my friend gave it to me in a squirt bottle) so idk the name but i'll see if i can ask him one of these days.

I suggested a si ple effective solution to the oyster bar problem, but he blew me off. I suggest have teflon screwed on bottom like an airboat. WOW (a.) seems to be the best choice too

OR (E. just pick the boat up and carry it across.

It is not the number of posts that makes any of us smarter or more experienced. Common sense goes a longgggggggggggggg way with any and all of these questions you have. Answer to aluminum against oysters, is you might be ok with a few passes, but oysters have razor sharp edges that will dig into aluminum and might penetrate the hull. As for how sd's hold up in saltwater, they run and hold up well, it is the oxydation from leaving such and engine with the salt elements on them. Wash engine well and after it air dries, spray it with wd-40 , the whole outside , for storage. I used the wd-40 technique on my fourwheeler and it really helps remove moisture . Preventive maintenance and inspections of drive components, like shaft seal, and water in belt housings, will prolong the life of slatwater or any use.

For starters maybe try a pelican 12ft intruder plastic jon boat and a saltwater series trolling motor.

I also run salt water 99% of the time. Rinse my rig off as soon as I can and spray the whole engine with wd40. Everything has been fine with 200 hrs. I did replace the old muffler with the new stock stainless muffler.

the perfect mixture of wd40 and used motor oil put into a spray bottle keeps em shinny and lubed. Exspecially in the throttle linkedge area. For those of you with airboats spray on the exhaust pipes, makes em look pretty slick. 75% wd40 25%oil.

Never heared WD40 mixed with motor oil .... you mean it does mix ??

Yeah it stays mixed. When you first crank it up its gonna smell like its burning cause of the oil.
