Uncle J boats can handle gravel roads
Hunting buddy said he hooked the winch hook to the boat.....first mistake.. should have checked myself. Trailer bunks were solid ice....well you can pretty guess what happened. Leaving the ramp after a unsuccessful hunt, when my buddy says " Hey the boat is'nt on the trailer right!" I slow down and here she comes....glances the back of my truck and passes us going down the road....PD and all. Damned is thing I had ever saw....and hope I never see it again. Did more damage to the truck than it did the boat....Jason builds them good. Backed the trailer up and 4 of us load the boat back on the trailer. Hull looks fine except for some scratched paint. Just glad it did'nt come off heading down the interstate.

Re: Uncle J boats can handle gravel roads
That sucks... Lost one or two at the ramp but never going down the road. Your right, could have been worse....

Re: Uncle J boats can handle gravel roads
I had the dog leg on the winch break one time. Thankfully i didnt lose the boat but now i use transome straps or a safty chain just as a precautionary measure. Might wanna look into that being yalls bunks freeze up there quite often.

Re: Uncle J boats can handle gravel roads
Yeah I also learned to never trust my brother when he said he had the strap hooked up. Last year i was pulling the boat out and went to take off from the steep landing and the boat fell right onto the ramp. I now always use straps on the transom and double check the front winch

Re: Uncle J boats can handle gravel roads
What I can't figure out is why my transom straps did'nt hold the boat? They were still hooked to the boat when we loaded it..I guess when the boat moved forward it loosened them were they attached to the trailer.

Re: Uncle J boats can handle gravel roads
i got a good one, its about 3 in the morning and we are coming home from the lake with the air boat. we are running up the turnpike at like 75 mph. all the sudden it feels like we got hit in the a$$ and the truck jumps up to like 85 mph. in a second. its a full moon and thankfully no other traffic, and in the moon light you can see the boat. its up right and doing 360's down the interstate. well were on the brakes and stoped on the shoulder. the boat ends up also on the shoulder, about 1/2 mile back. run down the interstate fire up the boat run it back up the road and onto the trailer. turns out it was hooked up but only with the strap. it was new a new strap and the stiching pulled out of the loop for the hook.
it was an alum hull with poly so there was no real damage. we tied the boat down and got home. it got a chain the next day. the lesson we learned was not to trust the strap. that night we tied the hook to the strap and since it was a good strap we left it that way. worked like that for a long time. since then ive cut the hook off all the others and tied it back on. its not pretty but its alot stronger than the stiching.
it was a sight to see the air boat running up the interstate though.

Re: Uncle J boats can handle gravel roads
Do like I do with my boats. Attach a chain to the trailer with an eyebolt and then hook that to the hole where your strap is tied to the winch hook.

Winch strap, safety chain, two ratchet straps on transom.
Every time.

Re: Uncle J boats can handle gravel roads
Glad to hear everythings ok. Ha that happened to us this year to with our longtail. We tried putting on on flat creek (no boat ramp) and almost got stuck so my buddy decided to haul ass because he was pissed off, get on the road, go across the bridge over the creek and try the other side.. Well im still in the boat when he decides to do this so were hauling ass on the side about to pull onto the road and a car is right there, so he slams on the brakes, well that's about the same time that we both realized the boat was still unhooked so the same thing happened except he was turnes just right to where i missed the truly Ck and went straight into the road, the car just barely missed the boat.
Needless to say we had to buy a new seat for the boat because my ass bit a chunk in the one that was in it
