Post New To the Game
Looking to buy my first mud boat and I had a few questions. I want a 35 GTR.
1. What size boat should I get? Going to hunt 2 maybe 3 people in Southeast Louisiana
2. I really want a center console. Is that a bad thing? Good thing? Pros? Cons? Is it easier to get out of the mud with a tiller handle?
3. If I buy say an Alweld or G3, is the transom strong enough to support a 35 GTR?

Any help is appreciated.

1. 17-18 foot. if you get a center console you might need the extra space of an 18footer if you are hunting 3 people.
2. tiller handle is better in the mud from what i've been told. others can chime in since i have never driven a CC hull in the mud.
3. it may be strong enough but go for a smooth bottom hull. if you want a GTR get a GT boat. it will save you money in the long run. if you get a G3 or something similar you will want to swap out to a MM hull after the bottom of your boat looks like a washboard.

Get a boat made for the mud motor... If your getting a gator-tail, look at their boats too... or look at some of the custom boat builders there are a bunch on here. You want the bracing properly done due to the abuse we put the boats through develop hooks etc

I tiller handle is easier to manuvera in tight places to you not sitting there working a steering wheel as much

I wont really be in tight places, mainly marshes hunting ponds. Some ponds just get real shallow when the wind and tide are going out. Im just tired of not being able to get to my lease when the water is low. It takes me about 20 mins to get to my lease in a 17' flat boat that runs 40+. Thats why im considering a center console, for the long run.
I wont be doing and "stump jumping" or anything. Just regular old stinky marsh mud.

If you're hunting 3 people out of an 18' boat the open floor you get with a tiller is better IMO than havin to situate around a CC...

and if it takes 20 min doin 40mph; say itll take you roughly 35-40 minutes with a MM... that ain't that bad of a run.
there's pros and cons to everything in this market.. what do you want more?

I'd say give the tiller a try at first and if you go with a company that builds boats for mud motors shouldn't be a problem adding on a console later if you choose to do so.

Id go with an 18' boat with 54" bottom, that will carry 3 guys and a hunt load and also give you space if you want to add a CC later.

just my pennies

I've owned both a console and a tiller. In the mud they both perform. The only advantage to running a tiller is in tight flooded timber.
