1652 Lowe Roughneck With 35 HD Mud Buddy
I have a 1652 Roughneck I just picked up a 35 Mud Buddy Sport (used but runs GREAT!) So far I've had it out once and Im very happy with the way it preformed I havent GPSed it yet, but I will and I will post the results. I didnt think it would do that great it the mud pushing that boat, I was wrong I ran the boat in a small section of muddy bank and it didnt blink just ran right through it. I stopped in the shallow (4inches of water with real muddy bottom) and I wanted to test its ability to get out from dead stop, once again I was suprised and it got out good. Did all this with 2 people gas tank and battery. Will order new prop, and then test it with a bigger load (hunting load) and post those results as well. Overall extremely happy with it thus far cant wait to test it out more especially with new prop.

Re: 1652 Lowe Roughneck With 35 HD Mud Buddy
Latest ride 3 people (around 625lbs) on big farm pond/lake
Open water speeds still good (sorry havent gps it yet, but will ASAP)
The only mud on the pond was in a real narrow cove but it was very thick and tough. There wasnt much room to mud and turn around in the cove so I got stuck a couple times because I ran out of room and beached the boat on the bank. However once I got a pattern I didnt get stuck. The mudding ability is better than what I thought it would be in that boat seems how its short wide mod v and ribs all the way down. In open marsh I expect it to do very well because you can keep your momentum going, instead of hitting hard mud and having to make a sharp turn in/through it killing momentum fast.
Will post more updates as I ride more.
Thanks

Re: 1652 Lowe Roughneck With 35 HD Mud Buddy
Took four people (225,200,225,180 = 830) to the river to scout some holes for duck season deep water speeds were still good just took a couple more seconds to get on plane. I tried to gps it with my cell phone but the program I downloaded didnt work I apologize. I'm just going to have to buy a hand held gps, I'm sure they are more accurate anyway. Went up a small creek and did some shallow water cruising did good still in what mud we found. Very stumpy creek motor took hitting the stumps very good hit two hard at full throttle and several more anywhere from 1/2 to 3/4 throttle.
Anybody know of some good, cheap, and accurate hand held GPS? Or a good cell app that is accurate?
Thanks I hope this helps some people looking to shop and purchase a mud motor. So far I'm very happy with my Mud Buddy.

Re: 1652 Lowe Roughneck With 35 HD Mud Buddy
That is the same GPS I was going to plug. I still have my Garmin Model 12, something of an "antique" by now, simple but effective. I teach middle school, and many of my students have GPS and compass features on their phone. When I can afford one, I will get one as well. MOTimberHunter, those Lowe jons are solid- my two good friends have been running their Lowe 1648 rivetted models with longtail motors since 1989, and they are holding up quite well. Neither their hulls nor your all-welded Roughneck 1652 are an ideal match with a mud motor, either longtail or surface drive, but they are solid. Another friend ran a 1980 Sea Nymph .072 gauge 1652 hull with longtail motors for years with great performance, and the last three years has run a 35 MB shorty on it very effectively. Since we don't have to vault beaver dams, skip over cypress knees or submerged stumps as in other areas, we get by with lighter skins.

Re: 1652 Lowe Roughneck With 35 HD Mud Buddy
Thanks backwater and Glades
Ya the old Roughneck is a solid boat for sure had it for about 8 years now and I've put it through a lot and it still looks great the bottom has a few scratches no real dents tho. The latest test of the boat was when I was mudding on the river next to the bank and I turned around to find my buddy, long story short I came out of the mud hit a tree stump went air born I went flying out of the boat and got lucky I only hit one stump when I landed. Boat didnt even dent just a wood mark scratch, and the motor fired right up. I'm looking forward to more mudding but hopefully no more fubars like that. lol

Re: 1652 Lowe Roughneck With 35 HD Mud Buddy
Ok sorry its taken a couple days but I did go to the river the other day with just my dog Jennings. I had two 6 gal tanks of fuel battery me (210) and the dog (75). I got the gps on the phone to work for a stretch of the river and in deep water it showed 31.3 mph it was kinda windy that day so the water was a light chop. Couldnt get it to work in shallow water but mudding and speed were no problem with the lighter load.
At the time the gps showed 31.3 mph i was runing straight up river at full throttle with the rpms at 3850. I could trim it up and pick up just a touch more speed but I was running 4125 rpm, and I dont want to run that high for extended time periods.
I have still yet to buy a hand held gps when I do I'll post more updates. Right now tho I'm saving my cash for opening day this weekend!!

Re: 1652 Lowe Roughneck With 35 HD Mud Buddy
Opening day duck season went not as hoped. The draw was for 38 spots we drew number 85 needless to say we did not hunt the marsh or timber where all the birds were and wanted to be.
Any how we hit the river.
Load----4 people 1 dog (225, 220, 240, 185, 70 = 940 lbs) *just actual weight everyone had waders and hunting clothing ontop that*
Gear----3 dozen decoys 70-100 lbs? 1 20 lb anchor
Gas----2 6 gal tanks 25 lbs
Total weight 1150-1350 lbs
Speeds 12-14 mph
Condition----windy, chop, over loaded lol!
Still was able to make it thru shallow water with mud bottom (5-9 inches)
Theory----If I had a single carb and motor upgrades with my performance exhaust I believe I could spin a 3 blade (or a standard big blade) faster and higher rpms and get boat on plane and actually increase abilities and not work motor as hard pushing all that water and load. Use after market performance and RPMs to get boat on plane and then back out of it so motor isnt working near as hard and doest "feel" that load as much.
Please let me know your thoughts on anything and especially my theory lol
Thanks

Don't mind the hen she got to close to the greenhead dropped both with one shot she was a accidental casualty of timber duckfare.

Re: 1652 Lowe Roughneck With 35 HD Mud Buddy
Actually I was just a little over and the old roughneck is a very stable boat I wasnt nuts about it but every now and then you gotta push some limits to kill birds. Most of the time i have 2 - 3 people and not near as much gear.

Re: 1652 Lowe Roughneck With 35 HD Mud Buddy
Bringing a thread from the dead.
I'm about to buy the exact same setup and sometime I have to carry 4 People + gear. Now that I see the speed this setup get and I'm wondering if a 1852MT would be a better setup with that same motor?
Would the rig go faster at full load?

Re: 1652 Lowe Roughneck With 35 HD Mud Buddy
Very good info MOTimberHunter. Helped me out a lot. I have a 1650 Lowe and just ordered a 35 GDSD. I was very nervous about the performance. Seems in the future I should definitely upgrade to a slick bottom boat.
