 Hard Facing
Just wondering if any of you guys have had a hard facing put on your prop, and if it extended the life of your prop? I have a guy that runs a welding shop near me, that has been doing it to his props. He claims to get about 3 times the life out of the prop. He charges $100.00 to do it. Trying to decide on if I want to try it out or not. I am due for a new prop and would like it to last a bit longer than the last one.

 Re: Hard Facing
The mud we run in out here is a very gritty mud, and will eat a prop pretty quick. This guy runs the same areas that I do. I may just give it a try, and let you guys know what I find out.

 Re: Hard Facing
Takes one to know one, Ginger.
Look through some older prop posts. I remember some guys talking about this a while back. Ddb was right though, stay outta the rocks and sand and they will last a lot longer.

 Re: Hard Facing
Seems like it would have to work. I have hard faced a couple dredge cutting heads before. I dont think they would do that if it wasnt for a reason. Id try it and see. for 100 bucks it may be worth it considering the price of a new prop.

 Re: Hard Facing
It is a layer of hard material - so it works for a short while - I would no pay 100.00 ( 1/3 cost of new prop ) to get maybe 2 or 3 extra hours out of a 50 to 75 hour prop...

 Re: Hard Facing
The guy that is hard facing his prop, is telling me he would get about 1 duck season out of a prop that wasn't hard faced, and that he would get about 3 seasons out of a hard faced prop. So 100 bucks for hard facing vs 400 plus for new props is a big difference. I have him doing my new prop this week!
