 Too Windy?
I've got a 1754 with a 35 GTR.
When is it too windy to head out on the lake fishing?
Looking like 20mph winds tomorrow and I was looking to be on the water All day.

 Re: Too Windy?
Depends on how tall the sides are and how big your balls are.
Ive been in 3' with my 1442, not something I want to do again but I survived.

 Re: Too Windy?
I tried it once on a "too windy" day. Ended up having to bail out and run the boat onto the shore. Definately not something I would do again.

 Re: Too Windy?
If I were you I would seriously go. It will be good experience for you. Like I said, just dont shut it down. It WILL be a rough ride, but try to stay on plane as much as possible. Take the waves straight on or at a small angle, but dont try to run the ditch. Start off in coves or creeks and take on some big water a little at a time. Once your somewhat comfortable head on out and take on some big water. Everyone seriously needs to train themselves on running big water with wind.
Bilge pumps are good to have, but if you dont pay attention to how the water is breaking, it wont do you any good.
Just be careful and have fun. Wear your kill switch and life jacket and go get yo some stick time!

 Re: Too Windy?
i was in 25mph winds once in lake decade, back then i had a a 24hp long tail on a 1436 rivited hull. i was literally watching rivets pop off. had to stand on the transom pulling up as hard as i can to keep the prop in the water. never will i do that again. put the rig on lasportsman for sale that night. that was prolly seven years ago.
i dont know how rough ur lake gets. but stay by the bank, if something happens at least u can swim to the bank or run the boat on land. usally when the wind is that bad i fish in protected waters.

 Re: Too Windy?
^ I'm with Brooks. Wear your PFD & Kill switch. Concentrate on protected areas of the lake and try & launch in protected areas to minimize the distance you have to run to get to your target area.

Exposure builds immunity and experience. You never know until you try. Be smart about about it and if it kills you, that's natures way of getting rid of the weak and stupid.

 Re: Too Windy?
Better to get used to your rig now in the warmer weather. Take a dip in the winter and you might be forked. Go with your gut feeling.

 Re: Too Windy?
4 footers and 5 footers, do you guys own and know how to read a tape measure. I am a Captain by trade on an offshore liftboat, and I have never seen 4 ft seas in Miss. river in 25 years. Even in a hurricane I was standing bye in Venice, most maybe 2 ft chop. OOO maybe they meaning horizontal not vertical. C'mon man ain't nobody running these boats in 3,4 or 5 ft waves. If any of you really think you can run in 3-5 ft seas 26 mph wind, PLEASE bring me a case budlight and a couple 5ft 100lb strippers to South Timb 24, about 3 miles offshore from Belle Pass. The seas are 3-5 ft wind 26 mph now, come on hurry up.

 Too Windy?
I've worked offshore for more then half of my working life and I've worked inshore and I've only seen 4-5 footer offshore and way bigger then that. I'm not saying some places inshore aren't capable of getting that big but I sure wouldn't try to go through them with my boat. Shoot a 1' chop beats me to death.

 Re: Too Windy?
Call it what you want but when there is a strong south wind the Miss. can get rough. The waves were close to shoulder high when I was driving and I'm 6'. I don't run a small 15' boat either. I had it built because I run the river. And yes I felt like I was going to shit myself crossing it. I would never want to do it again.

 Re: Too Windy?
When you get a 25+ wind blowing upstream you get big waves. When sitting down and in the ditch you couldn't see over the wave. Eight miles of lake with a strong north wind also stacks up the waves, 3 footers are common on days like that. On the bay of Green Bay you will also get 3-5 foot waves. I have a 1654 and on not scared to take it out there. Do I like it? Not really, but ya can't kill ducks on the couch. Stick time, stick time, stick time.

 Re: Too Windy?
We get nasty bull shit wind outta nowhere here in Wyoming, dead calm then 40 to 50 mph for no reason. Its not the waves breaking over the bow that will get you its the ones that come in the back. One big wave over the back and its over no bilge pump can move that much water before the next one comes in.
Most boats can handle some nasty shit with a good driver and a running motor, put some water in that briggs and see how fun it is sitting in white caps. The best thing to do in these boats is plan on not heading straight for the middle when its rolling.
