 Hybrid layout boats
I made these for layout hunting. Well, obviously they're not quite finished yet.
They're made of 1/4 and 1/8 plywood-marine grade if you can get it, but regular is fine-then covered with fiberglass. That's the stage I'm at. It's a fun, easy, relatively inexpensive project that anyone could do-even as a father/son/daughter project.

 Re: Hybrid layout boats
I am going to get around to building some "coffins" sooner or later. I can make 2 8x2x1' shells from a sheet of 3/8 and a sheet of 1/4
They won't be stable or paddle for chit but they will be super easy to spud up and hide in the brush or grass beds with, stack them into each other and load them in the boat when it's time to go.
I don't really want to glass them, I might glass the seams and paint it good and if I like it I'll build more the right way.

 Re: Hybrid layout boats
Yea, I've always wanted something I could just tuck into the grass on the shore or the edge of a pond. For years, I've been frustrated watching the ducks take one look at the blind and fly to where they want to be rather than where I want them to be-especially late in the season. Now I'll be able to go there too! You can make these out of two sheets of plywood if you do all the parts the same thickness. It took me three per boat because I chose to do the bottom as well as the framing in 1/4". They say (on the duck chat thread) that if you glass them, 1/8 is thick enough for everything except the framing. There used to be several hundred, literally, posts on that thread. Lots of info. Not sure where they went. The wood is glued together with construction adhesive using the stitch and glue method where you hold the parts together with zip ties or wire until the adhesive dries. Some people have simply painted them at this stage and it works, just doesn't hold up as well, but is good for several years. Some people have put trolling motors and even small outboards on them. I don't know if you've seen them, but people make small long tails out of weed eaters! Looks easy to do. I'll post a link. Don't get much more than 5-7 mph, but beats the shit outta paddling!!! The boats will stack. Some people tow them out to their blind then paddle/pole to the layout spot. I thought about coffins, but decided these were no more difficult to build and were, hopefully, a little more versatile.

Doesn't seem to. I don't see too many of those where I hunt though

 Re: Hybrid layout boats
My friend built one last year that is big enough for him and his dog, he uses a 7 hp outboard to power it. I thought about building one but I only shoot 1-2 ducks per season so it hardly seems worth it.

 Re: Hybrid layout boats
Paleo...hehe Boatdr...the bottom and sides are cut from the same 4x8 sheet, theoretically (I used two sheets so I could use 1/4 for bottom) so I think the plans call for the bottom to be 36". The sides are 6" wide. At the widest point...f it-I'll just go measure it

 Re: Hybrid layout boats
The width at the widest is 42" You can change that with a narrower bottom or less flare of the sides. I've really enjoyed the project. You can get the "plans" but they are far from set in stone. Really more of a set of basic concepts to work off if, although they are thorough enough to get the job done. For a while, the guy was offering a video of the building process and templates for cutting the parts, not necessary, but would make it much easier. That duck chat link has LOTS of info. I'd be happy to talk with you if you ever decide to build one.

I'm glad. I was thinking that there would be a few people here that would like 'em Again, although I'm no expert, I've learned a few things I'd be happy to share with anyone who's interested, either here, or by phone.

 Re: Hybrid layout boats
Where do you get 1/8" plywood? Lowes and home depot don't show any that thin on there website, just 1/4.

 Re: Hybrid layout boats
Sorry, my bad. I put this project aside for a whil, so my numbers were off. Just double checked: 1/2" bottom and transom frames. 1/4 for sides. 1x4 or 1x6 for cockpit frame. I used some luan (thin plywood) for the bow/front deck because it was easier to bend than the 1/4 that the plans call for.

 Re: Hybrid layout boats
I found some 4x8 sheets of 1/8". I think if I use 1/8 all over and pit a good bit of fiberglass on it it would be lighter and still strong.
How long it the whole boat?

 Re: Hybrid layout boats
Thanks, slut The great thing about these boats/plans is that you can use your "wheels" a little or a lot! Check out this link and you'll see what I mean! (this is the thread I was trying to link to earlier, but had the address in correct. This one is where I got all my ideas from. You can buy the plans, but they're pretty basic, and there's much more info in the following thread. Read that, and you don't really need the plans. Long as hell, but it covers everything-and then a lot more! http://refugeforums.com/refuge/showthread.php?t=602498

 Re: Hybrid layout boats
Those are cool, CJ! I like the dog blind Yes, all 1/8 would be fine. The strength really comes from the glass. Several people on that thread did it, and none had problems.

 Re: Hybrid layout boats
No prob;)
Those look really neat. Nice that they're a little longer. One of the complaints from people who have made these is that they don't track/paddle well-go figure with an 8' boat! Although truthfully they aren't really meant for that. More like boat/coffins. I like the looks of the Four Rivers layout. Looks like it would handle a small long tail like a stump jumper well. But then you start getting into a good bit of money for a "just for fun" boat. Oh well:)
