I thought it would be beneficial for people new to mud motors to read this post and get some pointers. If you would like to post eny safety tips, hazardous conditions,or tools that you should carry with you. That would be great.

 Re: SAFETY
If you own a GoDevil don't get yourself in a bind by going to far in a narrow ditch, cause you don't have reverse.

Wear a PFD and a Kill Switch while the big motor is on.

 Re: SAFETY
Carry a set of neoprene gloves in case your coils start going out. The shock isn't fun!
Seriously though, Delta has seen my toolbox. Although I have really never had to use it, its nice to know its there. I have two of every safety item except one fire extinguisher. Raingear, pdf's, throw, rope, anchor, paddle, charged 4 mile radius radio, extra bubs for running lights, dry shirt and shorts, and of course if all else fails...a Cohiba cigar and a book of matches.

Always make sure gas tank is full no matter how much riding your doing, spare set of spark plugs, electrical tape, misc. wrenches. First Aid kit, had to use it more than once. Couple bottles of water, cell phone, GPS, and for god sakes i don't care what motor you drive put a damn tow rope in your boat..lol

 Re: SAFETY
Be extra careful when driving with hip boots or waders on, carry a knife just incase you would fall in, I'm sure that wouldn't be fun.

 Re: SAFETY
Yep it is from a mudmotor prop, happened a couple years ago in southern Arkansas. He wasn't wearing kill switch.

 Re: SAFETY
Instead of testing an area by going wot, test it first at 1/4 throttle. that way you dont get fubar stuck and getting out is more manageable. If the mud is soft then you can go wot. Dont ask me how I know this.

 Re: SAFETY
keep a spare kill switch lanyard in the boat just in case you toss your ass out your buddy can crank the motor up and come back to get you. also i have a couple people i bring with me on a spare occasion that dont know jack about running a motor, so make sure everybody in the boat can atleast half ass operate the motor just in case something happens and they need to drive.

 Re: SAFETY
On my small boat, I replaced the coiled cord with a three foot piece of thick plastic trimmer cord and replacd the small plastic clip with a carabiner. Gives me a little more room to move about and use both my hands and I can clip the carabiner to my belt, my PFD, or my jacket. Yes, I kept it short enough that it will definitely kill the motor before I go over the side;)
