This book is unlike any of Kelton's other works. The time setting is the 1950s and the seven-year drought we experienced during those years. The plot/theme is the end of the era of independence and freedom among cow men ... the time when they told themselves the drought forced them to sell themselves to the government to receive hay in return for their souls and their pasts.

I think of this book as a companion read to Abbey's, Brave Cowboy and McMurtry's, Hud (the book). All three writers were capturing a time and an attitude representing an end of an era when ranchers continued to curse the government out of habit while accepting welfare money as gracefully as the city poor they despised for doing so.

Kelton's book is as good as the other two, maybe better.

We have witnessed the death of shame in our society. Without shame there is no responsibility. Many things that were taboo are now accepted and we are all worse off for it.

20 years ago if an unwed mother had to use Medicaid to get her daughter prescription glasses she would have done so quietly. Wanting not to draw attention to her lack of a husband (possibly showing a lack of life skills), or her need for government assistance (possibly indicating a lack of job skills). These days she would bitch for all to hear if Medicaid would not pay for designer frames, all the while sending smart phone photos of the child in different frames to her baby's daddy!

Remember when people had respect for themselves, their families, their employer, and their government? Remember when people actually took advantage of an education and appreciated a job opportunity to prove themselves? These days, you can't find a kid that wants to learn a trade, yet they will shamelessly take anything the government will dole out to them, while they sit at home playing x-box contemplating new and more inventive ways to be worthless pieces of shiat.

What I don't understand about welfare is.... Why don't these people have to work for the assistance they receive? I bet if they had to go out and put in an honest days work, the number of people on welfare would drop drastically.

I don't have a problem declaring some of those on public assistance may not deserve it. It is just not all of them.

I will say this about attorneys...

i was told by more than one,,,"your best bet is to stay out of court, cause once you get in there its like flipping a coin"!!!! That is what makes my blood boil...JUDGES DO NOT DO THIER JOBS TO UPHOLD THE LAW!!!!!!!

If you ask me,,,a judge is no better than a ROACH!
