Custom Exhaust Build Questions
Im looking into building an aftermarket exhaust. I have the tools/welders/and material at hand to use at my convenience. I was going to ask and see what the best thickness and best material to use would be? And what are some of the things i should steer away from and what i should look at doing? I plan on adding some sort of baffle in it, just unsure of the best way to approach it.
Any advise helps! Thanks, Laiken
P.S.- I already have some plans and designs draw up and what i think ill like. No numbers and measurements yet, but ive got the time to take it piece by piece and build it as i go..

Re: Custom Exhaust Build Questions
I'm just about finished mine. I'm using 4"schedule 10 for the muffler. I have 1.5" SS 16ga tubing for headers. I also have them to slip fit like the MM to prevent cracking and give some room for thermal expansion. No baffles in mine. ComPletely open. I have two 1.5" outlets. My outlet pipe extends all the way inside the 4" until about 1/2" from the other side. Read that this helps with backfiring ( maybe it does, maybe it doesn't). Should have it all welded possibly this weekend.

Re: Custom Exhaust Build Questions
Looked to purchase but didn't find any. Decided to cut my own out. Took the new gasket, traced it out on some SS 1/4" plate and cut it out with my plasma. Cleaned them up and ready to weld. 1.5" SS came from Columbia mandrel.

Re: Custom Exhaust Build Questions
Yea I'm probably gunna cut my own out as well! Just seems easier to do if you have the tool and time to do it. Saves money too!

Re: Custom Exhaust Build Questions
Me either, went to LSU game yesterday and didn't get to mess with it. Went out this morning to start and I'm out of Argon. Gonna have to wait till sometime this week to get another bottle. Will post some pics when done.

Re: Custom Exhaust Build Questions
So your welding stainless with straight argon, how does it look and weld.

Re: Custom Exhaust Build Questions
Going to tig it. Tig welding SS I use 100% argon. Mig welding SS I use tri mix. Don't have any alloy wire for my mig and would rather tig it because it's thin wall pipe and tubing.

Re: Custom Exhaust Build Questions
Did you get a builder kit? 1.5 ss? I have been debating on building a custom or gutting a stock stainless. May try both and see what I like better.

Re: Custom Exhaust Build Questions
From my experience having modified the stock stainless muffler and fixed it twice since then I'm starting to wonder if I should have just cut it off at the headers! I been chasing cracks almost everywhere there was a factory weld.
