Adjusting valves one at a time?
Was having the slow starter issue so knew my valves were off.
But I could not get the 1/4" past tdc to work for me. I used a measuring tool and everything, but the intake side was always too tight, and there were no more threads to back out the torx bolt any more.
Saw the utube video of the small engine shop doing one valve at a time. So I just turned the prop to get each valve in the right position and adjusted each valve to .006.
Started up a lot easier and ran fine so I guess I'm good?

I set mine a little tighter being a modded motor. I go between .004 and .005. If I remember correctly a tighter valve will be better on the low end.

I for one frown upon sticking anything metal into the cylinder. I use bamboo chop sticks. They work great and there free with the dinner.

Re: Adjusting valves one at a time?
Well I thought I did, but maybe I was trying to set it 1/4" past the exhaust stroke, since the piston is at tdc on the exhaust stroke too. This is the video I used to set the valves. Am I ok this way?

Re: Adjusting valves one at a time?
I remember reading an article about the pros and cons of this method versus the TDC method but I don't thing it made much difference which way you did it. I think the theory for some preferring the TDC method was there was less of a chance of getting a lash clearance variance between the two valves.

Re: Adjusting valves one at a time?
I found this thread just in time to check my valve lash on my 1yo gtr. I tried all 3 methods above. First off, the valves were all about .008 or .009 using the video method. They were all about .007 using 1/4" TDC method and 50hp's method. I set them at .005 using 1/4" TDC method and checked them with 50hp's method, all .005 maybe 1 .006. Checked them using the video, all were .007 except 1 intake was .005/.006.
Everything runs fine, seems to idle 50-75 rpm higher and smoother, but that may be the imagination.
What I did realize is if you set your valves to .004 or .005 using the video, they're likely .002 or .003 using the other two methods. That may be fine, but I'm not a mechanic.
Thanks MMT
