Post First Custom 17x44 Build- PICS
Here's the latest project. First big boat of this type. All autocad designed. Took on the project for a friend in trade for some work on my property this spring,...and of course an occasional borrow here and there. I usually have my stuff CNC cut, but lead times were too short, so I had to go old school. All hand laid out and cut. Turned out really good for my first big boat I think. Havent built anything since the last 13' sneak boat. I traded off my spoolgun welder and picked up a new Miller350P & Aluma-Pro set up. It has a bit of a learning curve. But, by the end of the boat I really had it dialed in and am SO happy with it. Welded a rake jig to my welding table and made an 8' extension table for the rest of the boat. I rolled 1.5X1.5X.125 Sq tube for the longitudinals, and used 2x2 sq tube for the transverse bracing. Used .100 for the hull, deck, pod, and .063 for the floor. It finishes up right at 17' long and 61" beam. You can see the sequence of build in the pictures. Wasn't thinking and forgot to backtrack over the weld before letting off the power. Caused a few pinholes. Discovered a cool crater fill feature on the welder that resolved this without backtracking... Took me a few long weekends and a few evenings to get it to where it is now. I'm hanging my latest gen 23hp surface drive on the boat as soon as I have it all put together. Guessing hull weight is 320lbs +/-. Im hoping it will run mid 20's+ light and high teens loaded. Enjoy!

Great job! I really like the way the lines come together, doesn't look like it's your first rodeo! You look to know your way around a welder too. I have a miller xr-control feeder with the aluma-pro gun, I'm pushing it with a powcon power source right now but considering the miller 350p and using it strictly for aluminum, I'm glad to see it's working out so well for you. I don't do a whole lot of welding so the price has put it on the back burner. Is there anything that you don't like about the miller?

Sorry for the pic size, I thought I resized them. Will try again. Got it painted and most important, got to let a happy and proud owner get it wet for the first time. Remainder of wiring should be here soon. and will have it wired by this weekend maybe...

Looks good! Did you hog the shear line intentionally?
