Post DIY Mallard Machine, ? about wiring
I'm in the process of making a DIY Mallard Machine. I've got too much free time and a free trolling motor. I've got everything worked out but the wiring. The power goes inthe the tm tiller/head then to a control box that controls speed adjustment. From that point, leaving the little box, are 4 wires-a black and red for power and a blue and a yellow wire. all four wires run to the lower unit/powerhead. I had considered using the tiller apparatus for on/off. Would be nice as I could adjust the thrust too this way, but I'd have to run four wires from the boat to the MM. I had planned on using an outdoor extension cord, but I'd have to use two. now I'm thinking I'll just use a simple on?off switch and discard the tiller. What do I do with the ends of the other two wires (blue and yellow)-wire them together? cover the ends and not wire together?

Thanks

Why not just use a 4 conductor wire??

Figured it would be expensive. I need about 25-35 yards.

That was my plan, but there are only three wires in an extension cord (see op)

Had the same thoughts about trailer wire.

Thought of zip tying two extension cords together, but the problem with that is that I have to attach both of them to the lower unit in a water-tight fashion and two won't fit in the hole. I could strip them down to the inner wires. That would fit. Then a bunch of silicon. I think I'll just see how much a four conductor wire is. I tested the motor and it doesn't seem to matter if the blue and yellow wires are connected or not. Runs both ways.

Get a single peice of speaker wire and wrap it/zip tie it the length of the 3 wire ext. cord.

Use one heavy duty extension cord and one of those momentary switch you put on the front deck of your boat for the trolling motor.

You can also wire in a automotive flasher 2 make it pulse and save battery power.

Y'all are way over complicating this. Go to lowes and buy irrigation control wire, it's 5 or 7 conductors and is waterproof and cheap.

Yes, wired like that. I'm tending to agree with you, pp.
At some point it turns into too much shlt for a nickel, which takes the fun out out of it.
