You dont hunt The River esp. when you are new to the area, unless you wanna die.

Its alot easier to hunt all the backwaters and lakes near it.

The Ms River is a totally different kind of hunting that most people have no business even thinking about, much less trying on their own. Crowding is not really a concern. Safety is your main concern. In order to stay alive, you need at least a 17-18' boat with 70 hp outboard and I would really not feel completely safe unless I was in 20'+ boat with a 150 hp outboard. Killing ducks is a whole different story. It takes lots of time scouting to find ducks and a lot of that depends on water levels being right for the river to even have any ducks. This year, there has been record drought and the river has been at historic lows. The river has risen lately, but it is still lower than what many river hunters would like to see in that area you speak of.
For someone who doesn't live in that area and can't spend a lot of time learning the river and how to run and hunt it safely I would recommend another style of hunting.

Ive hunted it north of Baton Rouge and even run it at night in the fog. Its by far the dumbest thing I've ever done. We killed birds but once we got back to the launch we said "never again". Imagine hunting the Wax where the entire run is like crossing the ICW. That's what it's like.

I grew up about 2 miles from the banks. My dad is an avid outdoorsman & had me on the river before I was 5. He had me running the boat not too long after that & put me in some situations to scare me a little but teach me. Winter & ESPECIALLY in high water it is VERY dangerous even if you are familiar w/ it. There is no way to imagine the force & magnitude of this river & what it is capable of. But what do I know, only lived on it over 30 + years.

Ten Four, I was actually more concerned on how the hunting pressure was than how dangerous it is. im very familiar with the busiest section of the Mississippi being venice area. Ive grown up offshore fishing down there & the big river gets crazy with Fog, Crew Boats, & Tankers. i DOnt know how people brave it down there to cross the river in a duck boat with 6 foot tanker waves pouring down the river lol.

Try running in Flat boat pass in a 33 contender only to find a shrimp boat running the opposite direction you are, it will open your head up for alot of thought on the remaning ride back to your house boat.

Ryan,
I do hunt the River from Buras and South and I am careful. The area you speak of takes a lot of running and scouting to find a concentration of birds and everywhere you may want to step out is posted. Nowhere near the opportunities as Venice. If you are hunting someones oxbow and standing out of your boat you are trespassing and those landowners will probably be real diks when they see your LA boat registration.
Due to the long runs and limited access, I wouldn't think there is a lot of pressure but there is a good reason for it.
