To those of you who own your own business..
Ive got a few random questions for you..
First, what do you own?
What are some things you did in order to start it, and is there anything you would do differently now?

Re: To those of you who own your own business..
I've owned 3 businesses. Had a cabinet shop, ran a small construction company (cabinets, trim, countertops, remodeling, etc), & now TCO. The cabinet shop, I opened as a part time gig while I was still a LEO, the construction company was my full time job afterwards. TCO is the result of me turning a hobby into a supplemental income.

Finish college first. It's not a prerequisite but should be your starting point .

Take it from someone who has had too many different jobs.....find something you love to do and do well.
I'm 36, and still haven't figured out what that is for me yet......haha

Re: To those of you who own your own business..
I was 12 when I ask for an allowance of $5 a week my mom agreed but the said. Now you are making money you can pay .25 cent a meal, load of laundry and toilet paper. I ended up owing her $7 a week, then she leased me her lawn mower for $3 a week. That was 40 years ago. I own 3 businesses, 1 is GatorGlide.com. She's 80 now and can still out work most men.

Re: To those of you who own your own business..
I own my business......It took working another job to make it work, but after almost a year and a half, i had the money to start paying myself. And that is officing out of my dads warehouse with no overhead......save your money is all i can say. Ive been in business 15 years now. If you have the passion and drive you can do whatever you want if your finances are in order......Do not over borrow.....by used vehicles and dont get fancy with anything...an old beater can deliver a product just as well as a new ford f350..........The reason i see businesses fail around here is stupidity....dont think because you own a business money will pour in. You will want at least 6 months worth of working capital in the bank. there are ups and downs so you need to prepare for the downs. once you make the 5 year watermark, you could beging to think about a new truck or bigger offices or better location......do not sign long term leases, work out of your garage if you have too.

Re: To those of you who own your own business..
My business is "The Blind Factory" we sell and install window treatments. Blinds, Shutters and shades...interior and exterior. commercial, industrial, institutional and residential. I do alot of work for martin and higman marine putting tinted roller shades in the wheelhouses, and have several other pushboat companies i sell to.....I did a lot of residential during the housing boom but that has slacked off and now it is a few windows in a remodel. I did more than half the new schools built in setx, bridgecity, png, bisd etc....We do a lot of work in the hospitals around here. Do I love it? not really but I know it and it provides for me. I am looking to branch out into other things in the future, but waiting for economy to turn around and business to pick up so i can save up the capital needed to open a new business......

Re: To those of you who own your own business..
Not the owner but part owner, My grand father started his body shop in the late 50's bc he never liked someone else telling him what to do and working off commission. Started in a one bay shop and a outdoor paint booth. Now we are one of the oldest shops in lafayette my uncle runs it, I worked there until I realized that the industry was on a spiral down with insurance companies and crazy fucking people.
I went to college and learned that a book can't fix stupid. Took a few things I liked and cursed a few things I didn't. I started working for the engineer firm I am at now. I enjoy the class of people the work load, the money and not dealing with the public. Now our firm is expanding and opening up a geotech company doing soil sampling/testing. I am in the process of buying into the firm. Let's see where that road takes me. It's all gambles and risk some get lucky and some fail. One thing is for sure if you never roll the dice in life you will always be where you are now. Some folks are perfectly happen with being a company guy and climbing the ladder, I say to hell with climbing the ladder instead buy it.

Re: To those of you who own your own business..
Gameover - I sold my motor. All I have is a boat now, and It will probably be that way for a while. I work 6 days a week, while also in college almost full time. I dont have time to do anything, otherwise I would of already made a trip. I tried coming out to Jasons just to meet a few of yall, but work held me from that too. Someday I will, but it wont be anytime in the near future. I wont be here too much longer, only a year maybe, and ill be transfering to a university which more than likely will either be LSU or UL for now although Im not completely set on that.
CB - Thats understandable.. Theres more than a few people who had the exact same outlook until they met me.
