I'm pickin up a 73 cj5 soon and not wanting to drop a whole lot of money into paint since its going to be a mountain vehicle but needs it badly to keep it from rusting.. I've read some good things about rolling or spraying on but want to here from people with experience on how it turned out. Thanks

IMO, ur wasting time and money with spray paint

I spray painted my old rims black and it lasted a long time. Only cause the chrome was coming off. I do spray paint the bottom of my truck and have to touch it up every 6mo or so. But I dont know about the body. Try it and see, might turn out ok

Make sure to ruff it up good If you're going to do it. The paint needs someting to stick to.

If u are gonna do at least use good spray paint!! More expensive spray paint covers so much better not watered down will save you time and prolly little money

Cover it with bed liner, inside & out.

Did it when I lived in CA. Held up well except for the sun. Did not polish like automotive paint after it oxidized. I did put a good bit of prep in.

A buddy of mine painted his cj5 ad it came out pretty damn good for a rattle can pair job. Most people would never know. Just have to be careful when fueling up. The gas will eat the paint up if slipped on it

Don't do it!! You will have a better paint job for less money if you get a cheap spray gun from harbor freight and get the quarts of paint from auto zone. It will take an incredible amount of spray paint to do the whole thing!!

thanks for the replys, thinking about spraying the whole thing in walmart bedliner since its held up good on the floor of my boat and bowfishing deck.. also a local paint shop quoted me 300$ for prepping, spraying, clear coat, out the door which is tempting

ive decided to just rattle can bedliner the whole thing inside and out. then buff up the chrome badges and put them on should look pretty nice for a mountain vehicle and hold up well to the elements. for now going to put the axles under the leafs plus 2" shackles and weld up the front and back diffs then paint everything in bedliner and put it back together

Personal opinion but I would prolly not weld up the front diff... I know u have lockouts but it will b hard to turn when locked in. I have full hydro steering on mine with detroits and it was one finger steering but I saw a lot of guys locked with hydro assist or reg power steering pumps and they could hardly turn or they would always break something

I've spray bombed a couple they look like shit, I have seen a mate pull in to a petrol station, put the last piece of newspaper over the windshield, unhook the tire value and spray a station wagon right there on the forecourt. And you thought red necks were all american.....

Oh... No just need a cheap paint job so I don't feel bad when it gets torn up
