 Recreational Boating Statistics
Sadly - I just finished reading that Alaska holds the unfortunate distinction of having the highest fatality rate per capita. Be careful out on the water. http://juneauempire.com/state/2013-05-2 ... -alaska-12Recreational boating accidents claimed 22 lives in Alaska during 2012, resulting in the Last Frontier having the highest fatality rate in the United States. Alaska’s fatality rate of 43.9 deaths per 100,000 registered recreational boats compares to the overall national rate of 5.4 last year, according to U.S. Coast Guard statistics published Monday. Nationally The Coast Guard’s “2012 Recreational Boating Statistics” is the latest installment in an annual series that provides a detailed look the frequency and type of boating accidents nationwide. The report lists a total of 4,515 accidents, which resulted in 651 deaths, 3,000 injuries and $38 million in property damage across the country and U.S. territories.

 Re: Recreational Boating Statistics
At my age - I remember back when almost none of the recreational boats we skiied and fished in had any floatation.... They were basically death traps and the only PFDs on board were throwable cushions and bouyant belts....
Every time a boat swamped everyone went into the water and the boat went straight to the bottom.... I was onboard as a kid in a couple of those swamping incidents - and no one was wearing a a lifejacket except the person skiing and even then it was just a floatation belt....
Those safety standards requiring life jackets and floatation did not begin until the 1970s - and fatalities went down drastically afterward....

 Re: Recreational Boating Statistics
I was concerned, but not surprised that not a single adult, except me, wore a life jacket at the Caddo run last weekend. Is the pressure to conform so great that you just cannot wear a life jacket? I was particularly shocked to see boats with small children in them wearing life vests but the parents none. Given that alchohol was flowing and there were so many boats, the dangers were amplified. I just think it's totally irresponsible.

 Re: Recreational Boating Statistics
Of course Alaska is gonna be the highest in boating fatalities and accidents, the rivers are the roads. My buddy lives 2 hours up river from town and that's the only way in. I have been up there and I can tell you that flotation only makes finding the boat easier. Fast moving cold water kills.

 Re: Recreational Boating Statistics
If you are in water you can not stand in wear a life vest. If you are in fast moving water wear a lifevest. If you ride 95% of the stuff I ride, ride the boat to the bottom and stand up...... flotation in a boat is for salvage purposes or dumbass that dont have life jackets on or available in dangerous waters.

 Re: Recreational Boating Statistics
Oh, even with flotation in fast moving water like in alaska. The boat will roll as it hits rocks. So I would think you would want to separate yourself from it.

 Re: Recreational Boating Statistics
Wrong
Only if the boat is under 16 ft .. I do not think just bc some jackass do not know how to drive a boat and crashes it . That I should be required to wear a life jacket it should be a choice.

You are perfectly free to not wear a life jacket, but you are not free to inconvenience me and those around you when we have to save your damn life.

 Re: Recreational Boating Statistics
All children should wear one, that's just responsibility of being an adult. I'm not saying no ones child wasn't.
I hardly ever wear one. But when running at night I always do
