 Re: Hey Netman
Turtles are awesome. Do you guys have a season on them there? I know we do, and you are only allowed a certain number.

 Re: Hey Netman
No season, just one loggerhead per boat per day. Good thing we were in three boats this morning.

We call alligator snappers loggerheads around here, since I've gotta go a couple hundred miles to find a loggerhead sea turtle.

 Re: Hey Netman
Good looking turtles. Our season doesn't start till monday up here, all that's left to do is go net some suckers for bait. Ready to put some snappers and softshells in the freezer.

 Re: Hey Netman
Jugs would be easy just how do the catfish not take the bait before the turtles? And do you leave the jugs out n check em once a day or can you make a night out of it?

 Re: Hey Netman
I use limb lines and hoop nets for turtles here in Indiana. We also catch them through the ice. On a clear freeze you can walk around on the ice and see them laying on the bottom. Chop a hole and reach down and grab them. I have hunted them by poking arund in the mud with a steel rod too. Good way to get them during a drought.

 Re: Hey Netman
I thought I was the only one that caught turtles through the ice. You can cover a lot of area especially on ice skates. I hoop net and also take the boat at night and shine for them and then gaff them.

 Re: Hey Netman
i use a wire basket made out of 2''x4'' welded wire 5' long. make a cylinder and flatten 1 end and lace with a heavy wire. you remove wire to get turtles out on other end use 2 pieces to make entrance laced in like a flat funnel. bait with fish gutts or chicken i drop in the edge of ponds with back end out of water. traps work very good and cheap to make. i put turtles in a 55gal. barrel until ready to clean them

 Re: Hey Netman
cupped if you ever see the county highway digging ditches stop and ask them if you can have the turtles. Here when the county highway is cleaning out ditches they dig up a very large amount of snapping turtles buried up in the mud. I can never get them due to my uncle is the county superintendent and his grandson works on the highway crew. They clean and give away hundreds each year. Its almost to the point that if I need some turtle meat I just call them. They have freezers that are solely for turtle meat. When they catch more than what they need they drop the extras off in my slough. When I want a couple I put out a couple hoop nets made for turtles and catch what I need the first night. I have some pics somewhere of me with a bunch of turtles we caught through the ice one winter when I was in college. My paw paw was a turtle catching machine. I took pics because I got to the age where I knew he was not going to be around forever. Glad I did. cr ever see how many mosquito s that hover over a barrel full of turtles?

I hold mine for min. of a week in a big horse trough to purge and clean them up. I just change the water every day, the crap that come off of them the first three days is nasty and stinks.

 Re: Hey Netman
Got to watch what you put them in. They will climb out of just about anything. I put a couple in my 2472 Seaark and they both got away.

Yeah, they are pretty good escape artiests. Cover with plywood and couple of cinder blocks otherwise they get away.

 Re: Hey Netman
Sons of bitches climb like monkeys! I keep them in a plastic trash can with a lid and keep them inside the shed. When we fished them in my pawpaw's Reno skiff or my old bateau we would put them in the storage in the middle seat until we got back to the launch...aways made for an adventure getting them out. Then once you got a hold of them in there without losing a finger or two, they'd find a way to get those feet on the edge of the hatch and hold themselves in and fight you the whole way. I think paw knew better but liked watching me fight them too much to bring a drum. Lol

 Re: Hey Netman
I keep a sawed off 55 gallon drum to put them in. Or tie them up like you said except instead of the slip knot cut a slit in their feet with a knife and run the string through it and tie their legs together
