Post SK calls
I have two SK wood calls. Sonny Kirkpatrick signed both of them for me when they were built. He died in Feb last year. Funny thing about Sonny, he would not let me pay for the calls with money, instead he wanted a dozen squirrels for each call. When I got to his house he was drinking a glass of wine. His grass was in about 4 different stages of height and I asked him why. He said that he always kept a glass of wine with him while mowing and when it ran out, he would stop the riding mower to go fill back up the wine glass. Most times he would just quit right then and start back up the next week or so.

I blew these calls for several years and when I found out he had passed, I hung them up for display. Both are double reed. Any idea what they are worth now? Just curious. Somebody is going to say 2 dozen squirrels for each...I just know it.

What do ya'll think?

They should be worth at least three dozen now.

My moms cousin lived close to Sonny and knew him well. Yrs ago me and my dad met up with my uncle joe and went to Sonnys place and he showed us his shop and talked to us a bit about calls. From what i remember he was a nice fella. We carried some wood with us and he made 2 calls for us, free of charge. My dads call was made from a cypress knee he cut from the bodcaw bottoms and he made me one out of a bois d' arc fence post that came from my grandfathers farm.

Post Re: SK calls

I was actually on another forum talking to a guy about mine in the above post. He was actually Sk's nephew. His mom was SK's sister. He had told me that he was very sick and wasn't soon well. Of course he passed now but the nephew kept in touch. I actually told him my story and how I came across the call and he went to see Sonny and told him my story. According to the nephew, he had printed out the story and gave it to him. He immediately started crying. It was at that point I realized I was holding a piece of history from him, and my grandfather. I have no intention on selling mine. It's in my safe.

I won't sell mine either. Sonny sat with me a long time listening to me call, then adjusting the call to fit my style. He engraved his name in both calls with aan old soldering iron, then clear poly over that. We talked about the passion of hunting and the love of calling ducks. He let me rummage through several coffee cans of trade-in calls for a freebie cause I left the heads on those squirrels. He said they were the best part. In one of those cans was a Ditto call I had been looking to find for a long time. He was unaware of the value he had. I told him it was worth about $500 and would gladly buy it from him. He said no, that he didn't need any money and had rather just trade for something. I left without it cause I didn't have anything with me of that value but my old truck and needed it to get home. About a week later that Ditto was in a box in my mailbox with a note from Sonny saying the conversation and stories told was worth the call.

A buddy of mine also got 2 of Sonny's calls and they got signed too. He did not know about the Ditto call. Any time we needed reeds or adjustments, Sonny would say to just bring more squirrels and come on down. Sure glad I met that man. He impacted a young man's character by teaching me that money could be trumped with a mess of head on skinned squirrels. He also taught me invaluable lessons on calling. I am a better person for metting Sonny.

Man the way you speak about him I wouldn't be worried the price of them. And darn sure wouldn't get rid of them!! Folk like that are hard to come by! All the old timers are dying off and everyone nowadays is only worried about making a extra buck!! Can't replace folks like that!!

Butch at RNT has thought me alot about comp and meat calling. But I couldn't trade him any squirrels for his call though! He has spent alot of time with me fine tuning my calls and my calling. Alot to be learned from old wise folks like that!!

Just trying to value for insurance purposes as part of a collection. Selling them would be like disrespect to Sonny. Not many people can affect me like he did. Just a nice old guy that helped out a young man at the time.

I am one of Sonny Kirkpatrick''s grandsons and it's possible that any of you who met him have met me and my little brother. We were little hellions back then. I was devastated by his passing, but it does my heart good to hear the man that practically raised us revered so highly by people who knew the real Sonny Kirkpatrick. He often preferred to trade calls rather than make money off of them. He took GREAT pride in passing on any knowledge that he could to anyone who was willing to listen. I know people who would come over to buy a call and he would be cooking and he'd ask them if they were hungry. He would always try to feed them. And if you told him, "no thanks," or "I've already eaten." He'd say something like "OK but if you leave here hungry it's your own fault." He was a man who was never affraid to speak he mind. And I seen a many of man taken down a peg by him. And he did make a few fellas mad speaking his mind, but if you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen, lol. I love that man, there will never be another Sonny Kirkpatrick. The world will never be the same for losing him. I'm just happy he impacted so many lives in such a great way. I miss him everyday, but it's stories like trading duck calls for a dozen squirrels that he live on through.

When I found those call in my grandfather's bucket, it brought back memories of when I was a kid. I knew that when his nephew told him my story, that I had something special. I thought of using it a few times, but I didn't want to damage it. Now yhat my grandfather has passed, I have several items from when we would go hunting. Figure I would just keep it in the safe with the other items. Then one day, I'll pass it on to my boys.
