Post What size motor to go with?
My brother an I have an old inboard mudboat sitting in the yard with a busted motor on it that we thinking about putting a surface drive on. It has an old Wisconsin THD which according to their website is rated at 16.8hp. I have never seen this thing run, so I have no idea how it performed. My question is what size surface drive would best fit this boat? The boat is a 1636 homemade out of 1/8" aluminum. The sides are 16" tall. I'm not sure on the weight, but I do know she's fairly heavy. After I pull the old motor I'll weigh it. I'll have to redesign the transom because the current design doesn't have anywhere to mount a motor so I am considering adding a hunt deck to it. Just trying to get an idea on what to expect with what size motor. Thanks in advance for any input.

What is the terrain like you will be riding in? Stumps, mud, sylvania, open water, shallow marsh, sandy bottom? Send pictures of the boat. At first glance, wouldn't it be cheaper just to replace the motor?

Get the biggest you can afford
If there's a bigger one, get more money.
You'll thank me in the end

Pas Tout, I wouldn't go more than a 35hP, a 27 will probably work, but they're partially right, bigger is better (to an extent). Show a pic of your boat - does the back come up like a rake like the Des Allemands mud boats?

I have a 27 pd on a 1636. It's quick (even stock) and will haul 3 people and gear (no dog) max.

These are the only pictures I have. It's the boat on the bottom. The transom is at a 90 degree.

I think we decided to go with the 25 gator tail. We're going to finish out the season with our big inboard and then start working on this boat after the seasons over. I'll keep y'all updated once the fun starts.

Just fyi...but the 35 is only like 30# heavier than the 25. You don't have to run WOT everywhere. The extra hp would come into play when stuck or hauling heavy loads.
