Post Some issues with my 35 GDSD
Over the past couple of weeks my motor has started having some issues. It has become a real pain in the ass to get started, and once i have got it started it will idle rough and die once or twice. Once I get it running and start on my way it will start misfiring or backfiring a little bit when it gets to about half throttle. It kind of sputters and just acts funny. after a bit it will stop that and start running right but the whole thing starts again after a hunt or what not. Also noticed last night that the exhaust was red hot and flames were coming out of one side of the exhaust. Read on another thread that it could be some issue with the carb or valve gaskets or something like that. Any info? motor as about 250 hours on it or so.

Post Re: Some issues with my 35 GDSD
well i guess i havent given much time to looking over the motor. there is a large crack in my exhaust. This may be recent because of the amount of heat in the exhaust from the fire, i am not sure.

took off the air filter and looking inside the carb. Have never taken it off or messed with one before so i snapped this photo. I didnt see any junk in there but i didnt take the whole thing off or apart. Will do that if i need to.

noticed a small leak on the right side of the motor, losened the exhaust to get to some of the bolts and tightened these bolts and cleaned up the oil. only one bolt was 'loose' had to put about 3/4 turn on it.

again if anyone has any input on this stuff, please let me know.

The flames coming out probably has alot to do with the cracked exhaust.

As for the motor running funny a buddy of mine has a 35 cdi gdsd and it does the same thing. When its cold it runs on one cylinder for a while then finally start running right. Don't have any idea what it could be.

Dude I can see the crack in that crankcase cover on my iPhone.

Easiest way to check for intake gasket leaks like you're talkin bout is to spray carb or intake cleaner around all the different intake gaskets with the engine running and see if the engine responds to it. After that I would pull the carb and clean it, more than likely the carb is your culprit. It could also be an ignition issue, maybe check the wiring on the coils for something being loose. Air fuel and fire is what you need. Remember that and go from there.

As far as the crankcase gasket, they all leak...just make sure the bolts are tight. You will just have to live with it.

It sounds like you have a completely stock engine....So with 250 hours on it your valve are almost certainly leaking. you need to take the heads off and change the valves and lap the new ones (I would go with some stainless valves) also get your Carb rebuilt....it sounds like you are having carb problems.

Looks like it to me. It's where they all do it, right on that dowel pin. You can see the line all the way to the head of the bolt.

Or maybe I drank too much coffee this morning

Where would i get my carb rebuilt at, or is there a place that i can order a rebuild kit or new carb. i dont think i will do a valve job myself though.

I would clean the carb (the most likely culprit from what you described) If you have the funds put a mikuni on it. It will solve a lot. The exhaust is part of the problem as well, change it out. Gut a stocker and roll. The casing gasket is leaking but that is just part of owning a briggs 35. Wait till you've got the funds to do a cam when you crack it open and change the seal then.

I have no problem putting a mikuni on it and buying new exhaust. I just have no idea where to go about getting that mikuni. I can order exhaust from GD

X10 on buying from the Boat Dr. As far as exhaust goes just buy a stock one and gut it unless you just feel like spending the extra on a marshmallow

Cut a patch off the front big enough to get in there and get the bullshit out, then weld a heavier gauge patch with a larger outlet over the hole. Make sure you get everything out of the muffler though, you don't want parts falling down into the motor.

Kylie find you a stocker and get with me, I found a guy to gut mine and weld it back up for $50. I attempted to gut it myself it is a huge pain in the ass. Also mud buddy sells stock stainless mufflers for $130 since they pull them off the 44s. Boat dr, team camo, or Hoyt at gt can get you a mikini. Most ppl go with the 42mm hsr I believe. Also check all fuel lines for cracks. I was having problems with my motor and ignored it till it died in 30 mph winds in port o Conner, my primer bulb split down the middle and was cracked to shit.
