My buddy wants to buy my outboard but I don't know what to ask for it. It's a 1981 Johnson 25hp short shaft. It was rebuilt in 06 and has been very dependable. Had to replace the impeller a couple times but its solid. Starts on second or third pull every time. I haven't had any luck finding prices online for this size motor. Any insight would be appreciated.

^^yes and tell him u will still need to use it from time to time. Just give It to him and let him maintain it.

Don't get me wrong, I love him like family. When I told him I was gonna put it on Craigslist he said he would be interested in buying it. I don't want to give it away when I could recover some of the price i paid and the upkeep expenses. That said, I am not looking to make money off him either. I'll sell it to him for a good price but I'm not made of money. I wish I could afford to just give it to him but I can't. I'm just curious as to what an approximate value would be on the motor. He's definitely gonna get it for much less than if he goes elsewhere and buys a motor.

Not much, call a dealer and see what they would give on a trade in.

I was thinking of listing it for $800 originally based on what a customer told me down at the bar I work at. But I questioned if that was an accurate value based in the fact that the dude was half in the bag and I don't take too much of the drunken bs I hear outta people seriously.

100-150 bucks or 75 and case of beer and maybe a reach around......

I'm about to list my mariner for $800 & let it go. So that sounds fair.
