(UPDATED) 2009 Conservation Banded goose hunt
Thought I'd start my first post on the new site off with a bang. My uncle and I decided on Presidents Day to see if we could find some geese. We Saw a bunch out in a grass field last week so we took 50 shells and 3 goose magnets out. We set up a very small spread and sure enough about 2000 geese came in......and landed about 300 yards away. Tired of waiting and watching I fired a shot to see if we could get them up. Sure did....and they backed up another 100 yards. There was one lone snow that stayed so we figured it may be injured or hurt itself when it landed. I joked to my uncle that it stayed put due to the weight of the double bands it carried. I did a goose crawl and at about 45 yards, it picked up and i shot it. The rest of the geese took off and landed two fields over. I went to pick up the goose...and all be damned.... a double banded $30 reward snow. The geese picked up again and flew back over. My uncle....I don't know how....picked out one blue from the flock that he saw had a band and shot. 30 minute hunt and two banded geese. We decided to stop, go home, and quit for the season. Great way to end. And we both will be buying lottery tickets this week.

Thats killer,we had a banded snow the first day of the conservation season. We do not know who killed it because the guy running the dog didn't check and we found it when we were dividing the birds.Let a fella who never got a band take it.My buddies call me a band whore because the first thing I do is check the legs.

Their is no telling how far north those birds came from. I too am looking forward to hearing where those birds were banded. Some of mine came from the Northwest territories. Congrats. Randy

Re: (UPDATED) 2009 Conservation Banded goose hunt
My uncle and I got our banding info back. Quite a trip these old birds made. And quite a coincidence. His blue was hatched 1999 or earlier and banded in 2001. My snow goose was hatched in 2001 or earlier and banded in 2003. Here is the crazy thing...both were banded almost 2 years apart to the day and both were banded in Churchill, Manitoba, Canada by the Hudson bay. Quite a long flight. Both were also banded by the same dude, Dr. Robert Rockwell from the Hudson Bay Project, American Museum of Nat. History. What are the odds that the only two geese we shot that day were banded but aslo almost two years apart to the day, in the same place, by the same guy? Quite a cool story!!!

Re: (UPDATED) 2009 Conservation Banded goose hunt
Thats cool....I shot a banded snow on Anahuac NWR on Jan 18, 2008...it was banded on Anahuac NWR on January 18, 2005.
Pretty neat how he was at the same spot 3 years to the date later.
